But I've worried when I go to Indian restaurants I was doing trashy things that were causing the servers to roll their eyes at me, like eating condiments straight with a fork

On one of my first visits to an Indian place, they had a fixed price multi-course meal that included dessert.

When I was done, I asked the waiter about our dessert. He explained that it was on my plate and I had mixed it in with the other foods.

I laughed my arse off, and I still laugh when I think about it.

And you should have heard us trying to get a waiter to explain what this "papadum" was that he offered. He could not fathom that anyone did not know, so he just kept saying, "It's papadum. It's papadum." We shrugged our shoulders and ordered it.

I've read articles regarding sushi that were written in a similar manner, but they typically contain advice from the sushi chefs rather than a random person of Japanese ethnicity.

There are so many damned rules, and if I wanted to mix my damned wasabi into the soy sauce, then I'm going to do it!

That said, I realized that putting a little bit of wasabi between the fish and the rice actually tasted a lot better to me, so touche arrogant article writer.

You are eating your sushi wrong!

Here’s a really hot tip for sushi..ask for fresh wasabi. If they have it, it makes a world of difference vs the pasty green gunk you normally get.

Would the restaurant even have it? My understanding is that restaurants in the US don't get the real thing and only have the horseradish paste with green food dye.

It’s like a chopped up root in more of a green liquid. The two sushi restaurants I’ve had it are in California, though, but they aren’t particularly fancy or special places. Can’t hurt to ask.

That's already done. It's how you make nigiri.

Yes, I know. That's why I said it. My point is that it's better just like that than also having the soy sauce wasabi combination that a lot of people do.

Oh okay, I misunderstood you.

Nigiri just needs an upside down tap of the soy sauce to be delicious. I love that shite.

Chicken (or shrimp or lamb or vegetable) biryani. Give that a try. It's a nicely spiced rice dish. Think Indian jambalaya.

Pakoras are a delicious appetizer. Fried, crispy vegetable fritters.

Samosas are a potato stuffed fried pastry. I think there are meat stuffings, too, but I've only had the potato ones.

If you can do better than Taj Mahal then your making some good Indian food.

Is that the one in old Metairie? I've had a few very enjoyable meals there. I'm glad corpus Christi finally has a good place.

Yep. Lucky to have a place that makes good Inidna food around here. They have a strong takeout too, which we do quite a bit.

How I sold my fiancee on it and she loved it. Really good stuff, though we don't often get it because it tends to be "rice overload"

9 mistakes you make at an Indian Restaurant

1. Walking in.

But seriously, never been a fan. Though I will say that all of my experiences with Indian food have been from working with them overseas and trying different things they cooked. I guess that's kinda discouraged me from ever walking into an Indian restaurant.

Indian food is like an explosion of flavor in your mouth, I love it. One of my first jobs was to help open an Indian restaurant in Metairie callled India Palace. There are so many dishes that I remember that I can’t find anywhere now. But then I only know of two places now, one on Cleary and one in old Metairie.

I wish there was one in Mandeville somewhere that I could frequent. Good to see someone post about Saffron, but I’m not in the city much these days. I am in BR one day a week so I will look around out there to see what I can find.

Yeah. Definitely compared to the quality of everything else there. We only have one place here and it's better than anything I've had there.
