So you are saying that if a steak costs $26 on the menu I can tell the restaurant Im going to pay them $16 for it and they have to deal with it?

Cost of items for purchase =/= gratuity

I say you go and get upset over the mandatory part and really send your friend off right

When places say they "reserve the option" to do this on parties of 6 or more and DON'T do it, I always make it a point to try to see that they get closer to 25% in tip (provided the service was good). However, if they automatically add the 18% on a party of six, I make it a point not to leave a dime over it.

Can't agree with you on this one since it's has nothing to do with the server - the policy is implemented by the management/owners. No need to punish the server because of your idiosyncrasy.

That's kinda shitty.

That has nothing to do with your server so you're punishing them for something they have no control over. Why not just tip according to service like a normal person? If your service sucks and you don't want to tip 18%, contact management if it's that important to you.

It was eons ago, but when I waited tables we were always given this discretion, to either choose to add it on or not.

I hardly believe that as a server you NEVER added in a gratuity for large groups.

...or was that different?

Where would you imply that from what I said?

I actually didn't imply that from what you've said, but I find it difficult to believe that as a server with a very large group that you didn't once choose to add in the gratuity. Sorry if I offended, but was looking for a yes or no answer. If you never added gratuity in at your discression, I can find more credibility with your tipping habits. If not, it makes me curious as to what experience you had that makes you so jaded over this practice.

You didn't offend, I think you just sort of missed my point.

We were given the discretion as waiters to tack in on or not. If the folks I was serving gave me the impression that they might be cheapskates, you can bet your arse we added the 18%. If I thought otherwise, I'd roll the dice and see how they tipped. More often than not, I would get at least 20% when I didn't.

I don't see my tipping practice here as "punishing" anyone for thinking I'm a cheap arse and tacking on the gratuity - I've never tried to NOT give them the 18% tacked on gratuity. ETA, I'm just not going to reward them any extra for thinking I'm a cheap arse.

I just feel like I'm rewarding someone for rolling the dice on me and NOT tacking it on, when they don't.

La Lagniappe is right down the street.

I had a luncheon at Boutin's just recently, and although the catfish wasn't too bad, the tartar sauce was aweful, the bread pudding was meh, the dirty rice was dry and you could tell it had been sitting out for quite a while, and the salad was on par with Drucillas. When are people going to get away from that iceberg garbage crap. It's horrible. Have we not moved past the 1970's YET?

Kewl. Was just curious because you've seen both sides of the equation.

Most of the better places have had the 18% for 6 or 8 people for a long time. Really don't think it has altered the service.

They have total control over it. They don't have to add in the auto 18%.

Just got back; they added it. And no, service was not worth going above and beyond. Worst part, there was a 3% live music fee which would be worth it if it was descent music. It was Zydeco and sounded like they played the same song five times in a row. So lets see who all got paid before I got a chance to get a meal. Tax: 9%; Gratuity: 18%; Live music fee: 3%. So, our food: $26.85. Our bill: $34.92.
