Facebook confirms you are who I thought you might be. I've been wondering about John's camp, too. I remember last time it flooded the camp got rocked pretty hard and he had to reinforce it with those huge I-beams. It's crazy to think of the river coming up that high. That building sits a good ways up. Keep me posted if you find anything out -AE

Yeah, when I saw "Bottomland Brew" a while back, I had my suspicions. When I saw your batture pic and the MT quote I knew it was you. Message me on FB and let me know how it confirms I'm me!

The 2008 flood was a little over 57' in that area. They had scour problems and some footings were undermined. The whole place got racked, but I don't think it got any water inside.

When they repaired it, they jacked it up a few feet higher. They went 5' over the record flood of 58'. 63' seemed like plenty at the time, but if the latest projection of 64.0' holds true, they'll have water inside.

They've also got some large web horizontals (with gusset plates?) on the verticals to add lateral stability. I'm concerned that if the water is moving fast and carrying large amounts of debris, it'll pile up on the upstream side and dramatically increase the load on the piers. If it is a slack or slow water rise, they may be OK.

The Corps/NWS/NOAA jumped the forecast from 60' to 65' overnight, and the road was flooded in areas by then. At 60' he had 3' of wiggle room. At 65' he'll have 2' of water in his living room. We're planning on going up there on Monday. There should be plenty of water over the road to run the boat in. I'll let you know what the deal is.

Dad, in about 2 months I'll be down in the Atchafalaya and Wax Lake Delta taking elevation measurements. That'll be my only involvement regarding this spring flood.

The river rise still has had little or no impact down on the delta.

Silver lining my friend. Let's hope the levees hold and we get an extra month of crawfish.

Yo Muddy

In 1973 we picked up 3 sacks of Crawfish as they walked across the road at Old River landing once the water receeded. The forebay area was also thick with crawfish

This could quickly become a bumper season for Crawfish

I didn't see Tractors on the Deer Park levee yet, but about 3 of every 4 vehicles I crossed on hwy 15 between Simmesport and Deer Park were trucks hauling trailers full of furniture. Water is really moving through the old river control now. Hwy 15 to Vidalia is closed, I think they are working on the section of levee they moved last year.

BTW, good time to do some hog hunting, saw quite a few on the back side of the levee!

Wow....surprised to see the basement relief wells of the vet school already spewing water.

No, but I can the next time I go. (I jog/walk the levee regularly)

It wasn't super notable, nowhere near the geyser it's going to be in a week or two.

Just surprised to see it flow at all considering the distance and the fact that the water is only around a foot above ground level on the other side

So, using these figures, the river will be carrying 3.2M csf after the Arkansas meets up with the Mississippi. That could get ugly. The river is moving 3.2 million "second-feet" of water, if memory serves me correct. To put in perspective, that's roughly equivalent to the cubic feet per second of water in '27 when the river turned sideways in Greenville at roughly the same spot. Moreso than the gauge, it helps to look at streamflow.

If you have iPhone, check out the app RiverReader or droid RiverFlows. It will project streamflow, gauge height and some other stuff that looks greek to me. eta, No pun intended
