I live close to the river in the New Roads area. The last two days there has been a shite load of choppers flying over my house along the levee. I'm talking about CH53's, the big boys! Guess they are keeping a very close eye on the levee to make sure some nut case doesn't try to blow it up or something on that line.

A very good friend that works with the cops here told me that they were told to watch for such nut cases along the levee and the locks too!

In addition, Terrebonne Parish President Michel Claudet on Tuesday declared a state of emergency because of potential flooding in the towns of Gibson, Bayou Black, Bull Run Road and Southdown Mandalay.

BEST ADMIN EVA!!!

This year's flood season is going to be a B. Not good. If you are in BR or in areas that surround the Mississippi and are scared you have every right to be. Don't let people call you a wuss because you are worried.

Keep an eye on the levee. I'll check it out next week when I go over the Hwy 190 Bridge. I pretty much know that the west bank of the river in BR will be close to being underwater like usual (if it isn't underwater already).

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) _ The federal government has declared 11 Mississippi counties disaster areas because of the flood threat
from the rapidly rising Mississippi River.

The counties declared as disaster areas on Thursday are: Adams, Bolivar, Claiborne, Coahoma, DeSoto, Issaquena, Jefferson, Tunica, Warren, Washington and Wilkinson.

All of them touch the Mississippi River.

Ole Haley is a pro at this disaster thing. Damn, it's been a rough 6 years in this state. Louisiana too.

They will open Bonne Carre long before they open Morganza.

They started pulling the pins two nights ago.

I've been following this thread from page 1, and I am pretty sure I've learned that opening the spillways (either of them) only alleviates the problems DOWNSTREAM of said spillway.

Why, then, would they open Bonne Carre first?
Isn't Morganza upstream of that?
Isn't the water still fairly low towards the Bonne Carre?

Tunica,

This is just north of Pointe Coupee. Guess they will be opening the locks soon for sure.
My daughter and hubby live at the foot of the locks. She told me there are all kinds of people hanging out in the area.

I wish they wouldn't open it. It's gonna mess up the pompano fishing and sweet baby Jesus! I have been wanting to go since Spring of last year.

opening is determined by flow rate

bonnet carre opens at a lower flow rate because I assume NOLA is at greater risk than BR

Far fewer negative effects with the BC. It just dumps out into the lake. Opening the morganza floods out lots of farmland, camps, houses, etc.

ETA: And possibly Morgan City

That's not necessarily true. For example, they blew up the levee at Birds Point in Missouri to save Cairo, Illinois, which is upstream of that location. In 1973 they opened up the Morganza floodway to save and alleviate pressure on the Old River Control Structure, which was in danger of failing- which was also upstream of the floodway. They're opening up the BC and Morganza to be safe and to try and keep the water from backing up as much as possible. As far as I know they've never done that before this far in advance of a flood. Should give you an idea of the magnitude of flood that's going on. Morganza is upstream of the BC.

There was a segment on WWL tonight about them piledriving 24/7 to get add'l protection in place before June 1st (the start of hurricane season). Some of the neighbors were bitching about the noise

I had to do some testing out there in St. bernard parish. Pretty cool levee they're building with a huge concrete door to close it off at the road.

Tunica Co. is in NW Mississppi close to Memphis. You're thinking of Tunica Hills. But that article also listed Wilkinson and Adams Counties which are northeast of Point Coupee.

relieving water pressure down river will relieve water pressure upriver.
