I heard on the news last night that if they don't open the Morganza Spillway it will top it anway...is that true or did I hear it wrong?

There are some great links throughout this thread. Maybe someone with time to kill and put them all in one post for us or the OP can add them to his original post??? TIA!!

I have been following this thread for 4 days, and while I do not think we will see the doom and gloom some have touched on, it will definitely be something everyone in the impact areas should follow closely.
However, I have been apalled at the reactive nature of the Corps, given their disatrous results in N.O. after Katrina. In response to a question about the true heights of the levees in and around Baton Rouge, I believe ScottieP responded that the Corps are checking those heights as we speak. WTF? Why would they wait until the spring to check the heights of the levees? That seems like something that should be done in the fall every 2 years or so. You should never have to hope the levees will be tall enough. You should know.
Also, for anyone that has greater knowledge of the intricacies involved than I do, how does opening Morganza affect Butte la Rose>

I can help you out by showing pictures I took back in Spring of '08
I took these pictures standing at the flag pole on the levee (straight past the LSU Vet school)
VIDEO of the river at flood stage
These were taken at the peak flood level, about the same time those levees in the norther plain states were breached and flooded homes Iowa, I think.
Here's what it's supposed to look like (taken this March):
It's scary to think that if this is supposed to be worse, and in '08 the water came that close to topping the levee, then what does this year have in store. The Mississippi is an awesome force. Do not underestimate it!

This is not close to topping the levee.

Uh, compared to where it's supposed to be, yes it is.

Yes! At 42'-43' Baton river stage it starts to overflow the gates. It did this in 1982 or was it 1983 for sure.

that may have been 12 vertical feet. until the top.
i don't know how many acre feet it would be from that water level to the top. I bet its has an exponential containment volume rather than a linear one.
Watch the video. that gives you a good sense of scale. Plus i spent like 20 minutes making that post.

I don't think it's exponential. But yes, generally as the water rises, the area become much wider, thus increasing the volume at a higher rate. BUT the existence of the levees themselves pretty much negates the accelerated volume increase. You only get get a large volume increase when the water gets into back-channel swamps and lakes.

quote:I think its around 6. I want to say that the river side of the levee from the base (the little field) is about 18-20 feet (I could be totally wrong, I remember heard this somewhere). If that is the case, that water is over halfway up on that side, judging by the eye it looks like its about 6 vertical feet.
that may have been 12 vertical feet. until the top.

I think its around 6.
well on the video i looked at the people sitting down and counted them as about 3 feet high from butt to head and it looks about 3 or 4 of those heights from the path to the water level, in '08.
Mud, thanks. i knew they'd come in handy some day. It's kind of interesting too. In my mind's eye I could have sworn it was higher than it is in the pics. so it's good that there is some evidence to make me think otherwise.

Greenhead, do you have a link saying the Morganza will be opened on Wednesday?
