Water just starting to climb up the letters at RR and Florida. Plan on taking a few pics at this spot each week to see the progression.

What's the approx. distance from where the water is now, to the top of the levee?
Posted on 5/5/11 at 1:04 pm to RummelTiger
I'd say at least 15ft just eyeballing it.

Well it looks like the flood will spare Vidalia and Ferriday.

How you figure?
Are you saying that the visqueen wrapped, plywood walls are gonna hold strong?

Just looking at the map it seems like the waters will ht the river bank area hard but spare the actual town.
Of course, that is if the map is accurate.
Not like Vidalia is worth a shite anyways.
No offense to anyone who may live there.

Well, Vidalia and Ferriday are protected by real levees. It's the new Riverfront they built outside the levees(like dumbasses) that are in trouble and they are scrambling to put up something to protect it. They are wasting their time, IMHO.

Let's be honest. Would anyone actually expect the COE to post maps showing that they think their own levees would fail? I hope everything holds but nobody really knows what the response of the levee system will be to this amount of water. Hopefully there isn't any more rain up north for a while and the river will come down without any failures.

This is by the vet school where a lot of people run.
Notice the barge in the back. Wow.

Levee at 45' today. Law enforcement is worried it could bust at 50'. Supposed to get to 48-49' next week.

Measure the distance along the surface of the levee from the water to the top of the levee. This is the hypotenuse (h) of a right triangle. The angle of the levee (aº) away from vertical forms one variable. To determine the vertical distance (d) of the water to the top of the levee:
d = (h) x (cos(aº))
If the hypotenuse is 20' and the angle of the levee is 45º then the distance from the water to the top of the levee is about 14'.
d = (h) x (cos(aº))

I guess old river and catahoula lake will be what causes us to flood if anything significant happens.

I'd say that's about right. This picture is from eye level.

The flood water that the map shows is not the result of levee failure. this is all backwater and cant be stopped

Note 1: Diagram of foregoing post.
Note 2: The angle of the levee appears to be more than 45º from vertical.

I worked on levee improvments is Madison Parish and if I remember right the slope of the levee was one for one
