I talked to my cousin who lives in New Madrid and even though they blew the levees there the water is still rising because the Ohio and the Kentucky river is still draining in it. It's supposed to crest there at 50 feet on Saturday. He's one of the many farmers who's land was affected by the blowing of the levees.

Yeah I dated his brother D.L., so your sister is B.L's wife?

Although that sucks, majorly, this is how his land became so fertile. From flooding and deposition of clays and silts packed with minerals that will make the lands fertile.

He'll be benefiting from this in a few years!

No offense or anything.

That four day period will make a lot of people nervous. Mark your calenders from the 21st to the 26th.

Keep an eye on the levee. I'll check it out next week when I go over the Hwy 190 Bridge. I pretty much know that the west bank of the river in BR will be close to being underwater like usual (if it isn't underwater already).

Yeah I went over it yesterday and the river was pretty wide at that part. Just seeing the river climbing up the levee made me feel sorry for those houses on the westbank just south of 190. I'd be freaking out already if I lived there. Theres that one monster house right there, not far from the river.

not at all .. some spots are as low as 33' from what i understand ...taking river road away from downtown toward the pentagon barracks, that portion of the levee starts to drop relative to downtown also ..

New orleans can only handle 1.25M cfs
Baton Rouge can handle 1.5M cfs

So if 1.35M cfs were coming down the river there would be no need for us to open the Morganza (which is much more political), they would only have to open Bonnet Carre spillway. Morganza is a last resort

That's not necessarily true. For example, they blew up the levee at Birds Point in Missouri to save Cairo, Illinois, which is upstream of that location. In 1973 they opened up the Morganza floodway to save and alleviate pressure on the Old River Control Structure, which was in danger of failing- which was also upstream of the floodway.

These are very close so it has more of an effect. If Birds Point and Morganza were upstream in the cases you presented then it would have even more of an effect than it did. For something downstream to help out upstream it has to be able to displace enough water so a higher velocity is reached to have any effect on the upstream areas. Baton Rouge and New orleans are too far apart for any upstream relief.

Generally: spillways only alleviate downstream problems and very close upstream problems

Isn't the river at 35' right now though? If so, wouldn't there be overtopping already?

Yeah that's what he told me. That they don't know when they can farm it again and parts of it they won't ever be able to farm because the sand will be too deep. Thank goodness he doesn't have a lot of his acreage there but his father in law has 2500 acres there and that's the majority of farmland.
