So this would mean areas like Beau Pre and Lake Beau Pre would be in trouble? (River Road and Brightside)
Yes.

Wonderful. :sarcasm: My house for next year is at the corner of Brightside and RR in that new Aspen Heights subdivision

Now's the time to go down there and catch the big stranded catfish with your hands.

Golfer:
They are going to open the BC, maybe as early as the end of this week. (Someone posted earlier today that they were already pulling the pins.)
The river is only at 13.9 in N.O. Opening it at this level isn't necessary for NO, won't help the situation upstream and just puts that much more river water into the lake.

shite....49.5 would top the levee in parts of Baton Rouge. I hope those projections are not taking into account opening of Morganza.
I'm really getting worried, now.
Anyone know the extent of the levee protection on the west side? How would New Roads, Port Allen, and Brusly hold?
I was told they were on natural levees, but lower than northern East Baton Rouge.

I do as well.

Wouldn't this be good? Give them more time to prepare and less stress on the levee?
It reduces the rate of rise by like 2 inches/day for 2-3 days. I doubt it changes the rate of flow at all, and that is what really matters.

I don't see why the BC isn't opened more often.
It just pisses off fishermen, right?

With the timeline ScottyP laid out, it only reduced the rate for 2 days

What is this about not being able to close the Morganza spillway once it is opened? I thought that as long as the Old River system holds we would be ok? I know next to nothing about what happened downstream when they opened back in 1973.

Not sure but I am guessing just bc of the shear amount of water coming through, that a shite ton of power.
Posted on 5/3/11 at 6:42 pm to TheDiesel
Yeah I don't get how the river would change course through Morganza? If that's what people are talking about.
All Morganza would do it help out the ORCS. The river would eventually do down.

Go back and read, the river has long wanted to flow down the ATC but cant bc we leveed it up, it may not happen this time but it will happen. Its not if but when.
Posted on 5/3/11 at 6:47 pm to GREENHEAD22
Yeah.. it would happen at the ORCS not Morganza.
Posted on 5/3/11 at 7:01 pm to The Boat
I agree with Boat. From everything I have read on the wetlands website about the floodways, the river wants to flow through Old River. That's why is it so important to protect the ORCS.

Yes I misunderstood the question

Time to start getting some sandbags I guess.

I wonder if they would think about canceling intersession classes at LSU

I think the potential problems with Morganza are destroying farms and the few structures in the spillway, the water level at Morgan City, and closing it since it's really old and isn't ever opened. But they'd figure that out once the river goes down.
