If someone broke into your house at 2 AM and your only option was a gun that hadn't been fired since '73, would you feel really great about that?

Or, if you had to escape a man with a knife in a car that hadn't been started since '73, would you feel really great about that?

I get what it's for, and that it's the only option left, but I'm just saying that to rely on something that hasn't operated in 38 years is kinda scary.

Does that really seem that odd?

Terrible analogies, and you really don't need to get that worked up over one comment. I meant you no ill.

I have been following whats going on in this thread for the most part, but I have a question. Is there a happy medium with all of this flood water? I know opening up the Morganza saves thousands of homes and businesses but is there a way that they could open it a little and let the water spread over on both sides of the river saving some people heartache. It seems that trhis all has to do with is saving Baton Rouge and New Orleans. Not trying to be an arse about the situation but I have farmland that will be affected because of this.

Reauxl no, they're between Simmesport and Natchez ... never been there myself. But they're pretty heartbroken although they DO realize it's a camp and not their primary home. Still sucks.

The caption of one of the posts noted a hunting camp. I googled the hunting camp name and found the location.

Not really sure why they didn't get all that stuff out sooner. The river has been rising for 2 weeks now.

It is why these protective measures were created.

Not at all. If the 190 bridge did not give way in 73, then the I-10 bridge will probably withstand this one, as it was built after that. I meant the Morganza structure.

They're not going to put any more water down the Morganza than they have to in order to ensure the levees maintain from that point downriver to here in New Orleans. It's not an all or none kind of thing where if they open Morganza they open it full and divert the full 600 kcfs--there are gradations of opening, fortunately.

I'm very sorry about your property. I've been praying for you an your neighbors every night since I first heard about this.

Unfortunately no. We farm sugarcane and if the water destrys the mothber cane it could ruin a three year rotation. For the most part its the Bayou L'ourse area next to Lake Pollourd. Expecting between 0-5 feet of water. as long as the water doesn't cover the cane for a long time we may luck up. I am praying for help.

I don't think so. The Spillway only flows one way, west into the Atchafalaya. The folks who have land in the Spillway have been paid for floodway easements, and they have had a pretty good run. I am not saying it doesn't suck for them, because it does. But everyone knows that the spillway is first and foremost a means of taking pressure off the lower Mississippi.

And another thing, because I'm sure you're thinking about partial flooding on either side (Morganza floodway vs. on the river) and the issue is density. There's a lot more damage done on the Mississippi side by sending a certain volume of water more than the flood containment can handle versus sending the same volume extra down the Morganza--there's just much more damage to be done along the Mississippi than along the Atchafalaya with the same volume of flood water.

Again, y'all are in my prayers.
