While flooding homes, camps and businesses and ruining millions of dollars in farm crops. I do understand what you're saying ... but a day saved for some is a day lost for others.
The lesser of two evils I suppose. This all stinks.

What other option do you have?

Zero.

Well, the discussion was about NOLA at the time, so...

Agreed.

Not saying there is one.
Just saying that it's scary to have to rely on THAT.

Silly question but is it safe to travel on the MSpillway while all that water is rushing under? I am not a science minded person but how are the support columns not affected? Same question for the Atchafalaya basin bridge.
As a previous poster said somewhere, I'm already sort of not liking to cross long bridges ... this makes me really go EEK.

No shite.
But it's been used once in it's life, so it lends one to be weary.
If someone broke into your house at 2 AM and your only option was a gun that hadn't been fired since '73, would you feel really great about that?
Or, if you had to escape a man with a knife in a car that hadn't been started since '73, would you feel really great about that?
I get what it's for, and that it's the only option left, but I'm just saying that to rely on something that hasn't operated in 38 years is kinda scary.
Does that really seem that odd?

As for the river, how high and how long it stays up are the two things they keep an eye on.
That's what worries me about the levees south of LSU. Heard on WAFB that the levees in the south part of the parish are lower.
For how high and how long is more of seepage. I seem to remember seepage on the west side of the river, will try and remember to call my cousin, she would know since it was close to her house.

Thats the bet, we along with some parts of Tx. have been dry, real dry. The ground should take up some of the water, a %, but still some.

thanks for the prayers nacho. its weird that thats just about the only thing that can save the people's houses over there. my parents and myself live in florida. they are there right now helping family and other people. im stuck in illinois and cant do shite to help. i feel so bad for them.
Posted on 5/9/11 at 10:09 pm to RummelTiger
LSU's FB page has a link about opening up the Morganza. It's surprising how people haven't been keeping up with this, or how things are supposed to work

I'm not stuck in Illinois and it's "only" my dad & brother's camp but it's like their second home.
The part about I can't do shite to help .. it's a terrible feeling. And I feel bad for everyone that has been or will be affected by this.

Scoobs, I have a friend with a family camp at Butte la Rose ... "it's high up off the ground" she told me. THey're not worried a bit ... and maybe they shouldn't be as I've never been to it but they are OBLIVIOUS to what it going on.

Good points, but this ain't a complicated piece of machinery. It is a weir with gates in it. It would be more like wielding a baseball bat that had not been used since '73. It's old, but it will still probably bash your burglar's head in.
In the off-season, they move the gates up and down to make sure they will function. The risk is not that it will not work. The risk is that it will give way entirely, allowing the Mississippi to flow into the Atchafalaya. Trust me, you would rather have flooding in Baton Rouge than that.

A bunch of my friends had no idea about this until a day or two ago. I know people with camps in Lake Verret who were moving out all of their valuables today, saying the water could rise up to five feet.

Just don't text while you are crossing it, and you should be alright.
