I thought the RR at Alex was still below action stage

I would think erosion of the support legs would be a problem if the spillway is open for any length of time. Take some pictures if you do pass that way. Hell personal computers weren't around last time it was opened.

Action stage is below flood stage. I'll take your word for it though. I'm from Atown so I'm interested
Do you know if theres any chance of back-up flooding for the RR, or even the bayou up there?
AlxTgr,
This is what i was talking about with "action stage"
Red River Stages in Alex

I'd like to see it. It would be a sight. But I also know that I don't want to be travelling over it
I'm headed that way from Texas on Friday....you guys are scaring me...I hate bridges anyway, especially those that have lots of water flowing swiftly under them

Saw workers in the pumping station right by downtown BR bridge for first time ever - I didn't even know that thing worked

Assuming that Morganza Spillway is opened any chance it gets bad enough to shut the basin bridge down on I-10?
It did not exist the last time the Morganza Spillway was opened. But the 190 bridge did. Surely the I-10 bridge would be designed to a higher standard than the old 190 bridge. So if the old bridge survived, and did it a lot closer to the inflow, then I would feel pretty comfortable in thinking that the new one would do just fine.

I'm 5'10" and normally you have to get on your hands and knees to get under the ramp. There is about 3' of clearence above me.

Weren't they required by federal statute to blow the Bird Point-New Madrid levee?
I'm not sure, but don't think so. Under the old operational plan they were required by Federal law to blow it at 58.0 feet with a projection of 60.0 and rising. My understanding of the Operational Plan of 1986, is that they were supposed to pump the slurry in at 59.00 feet and at 60.0 feet it was at the discretion of the President of the Mississippi River Commission. Don't hold me to that.

There are some specific fuse plug statutes under Title 33. Not sure exactly what they require or allow. Under the original flood control acts, the Corps has immunity for acts taken in connection with flood control projects. That has been challenged some in recent years, but it is pretty strong language.

In my youth they were something else.
The Creole Queen was on her way to Chalmette and went screaming by. Current is really running.

Lowest elevation is Railroad Ave or the Southern end of the seawall. At 6.4 feet it is creeping up to the base of the wall. On the northern end of the seawall, it is closer to 7.5 to 8 feet

I can't remember if I read on here or not, but I remember seeing at some point something about 190 closing for a bit when Morganza opens up. Don't quote me on that.
ETA:
quote:
Additionally, based on the potential opening of the Spillway, the U.S. 190 Morganza Spillway bridge repair project is on hold and the mats placed for equipment to access the work site are being removed from the floodway. DOTD will monitor state roadways that have been identified as being affected by the possible opening of the Spillway and close roads as appropriate.

I would think Exxon knows exactly how high the levee is. Ask them.

sorry for not reading the thread, but will the LSU campus be affected by it? LSU's fb page just posted up a few pics near skip bertman drive and that water's getting pretty high.
