they want that paycheck.

We have to start recruiting them better, like they're high school recruits, and show them more "love."

We've got to help them get insurance policies and offer retention bonuses.

I would say without a doubt LSU has lost the most early departures. saban in his time at bama isn't really that far behind. Since the '08 draft I think the difference is six players and that includes the '20 draft.

Waddle wasn’t draft eligible.

attrition has been brutal for LSU, can we get a few to stay.

From O's recent pressers, it seems as though he's going pretty on trying to convince guys to stay for next year given the oddness of this season. I think Jacoby Stevens and the LBs would have a chance to vastly improve their draft stock if they did so.

Saban is paying these guys hundreds of thousands to stay an extra year.

Not Really.
He is very nonchalant about it

I've always heard him stay out of it. He says he tells them their draft grade and it's their decision

I will agree that we lose too many underclassmen that shouldn't go pro. If you're under 2nd round, you should stay.

Last year was an anomaly with the amount of first round picks.

If you're under 2nd round, you should stay.

I see this posted a lot. The problem with this statement is most of those guys getting drafted later, will not improve their stock by returning. They are what they are in college and will need NFL coaching to improve or they won't cut it in the NFL.

Then you have players like Charles. Frequently getting suspended and would probably continue to get suspended because of the rules. He would rather walk away from the suspensions and collect a check. That's just the reality of it.

I’m not sure any coach can recruit a player to stay.....even if his draft grade is 3rd or lower, they want that paycheck.

LSU has had the worst luck on this, but there is not much you can do.

Alabama returned Devonta Smith and Najee Harris, Clemson a couple year back returned two locks for first round picks, and a top 3 round lock on the DL.

As a matter of fact, these are the juniors Bama has returned over the last 5 years with MULTIPLE years of success. This doesn't even include guys that have had a one year breakout junior season and still returned like Tim Williams and Reuben Foster. Also, this list doesn't include the OL either.

RB
Damien Harris
Najee Harris

WR
Devonta Smith

TE
OJ Howard

DL
Jonathan Allen

LB
Ryan Anderson
Afernee Jennings

Tre White and La'el Collins are the only LSU guys in recent memory I can remember that has had multiple years of success and came back for their senior seasons. I mean I guess you can include Deculus, but I wouldn't say he was good for 2+ years.

1. It makes your college team better for you to come back.

2. Potential to move up should sway you to come back imo. Its a risk on either side. Come back and get hurt could sink you, but having a killer year could boost you.

Kevin Tolliver could have made himself some money on the front end had he returned. Delayed gratification is real. He didn't want to wait.

when does O pay players families to stay?

Much more accurate to what actually has to happen to fend off NFL attrition.

And for god's sake, start bringing in "independent" consultants for in-house draft grades.

ETA: we all know the lure of a paycheck is the real problem. You must address the real problem to solve the problem. Anything else is either symbolism or hope-and-prayer.

Rule #8 for any youngsters from those of us who've been out of the nest for a long while now: You don't change minds, you can only change motivations. That is just as true for this situation as it is politics.

Is that the problem to you?

LSU, in my OPINION, does pay the players to return.

Note I mentioned the families. Taking care of the families does more to alleviate the issue. Every opt out, every early departure, we seem to hear some comment about family situation, family conversation, or a family member (not the player) stating that they thought it was the right decision. It's "recruiting mom" theory on steroids.

Do I have a problem with paying them? Hell no. INMO that's one of the primary [unstated] goals of both TAF and the L-Club. Every time I write a check I cross my fingers at least a portion goes to "acquisition" (i.e. recruits) and "retention" (i.e. getting players to stay). Hell, I put it in the memo of one check. I got bawled out for that, and granted that was stupid, but it made my wishes known for sure.

Every kid is advancing towards graduation this year while their eligibility remains stagnant. So this year you’re likely to see more kids than ever enter the portal and leave for playing time. I worry we will piss off a few more of Pelini stays.

And don't we discuss how those schools pay and take care of players through churches and car dealerships multiple times a week? Most of those guys you named, we accused of going oos because they got paid. So my point still stands
