Are rat snakes pretty docile or will they bite the crap out of you?

Got a smallish one hunting around a shed I have in rural Mississippi.

Reached down to touch him gently with a broom and he quickly shied away.

Also, will they take on rattlers and moccasins or are they only after rodents?

They will try to run unless cornered then they will try to bite the shite out of you

Rodents...king snakes are the ones that hunt other snakes.

Rat snakes are mean as hell. I've had a bunch of types of snakes in my classroom over the years. By far the most foul tempered was a rat snake.

That seems like a risky thing to do. You know what they say about payback.

They tend to be a bit nippy, especially smaller ones. But, some of them are pretty docile. None of them will bite you if you're not messing with them.

I would call them skittish... they’ll run away if they can but if cornered.. they’ll come at you like a fricking Wolverine

Every one I have encountered was very docile. I had one on front porch that was about 4 ft long and he took his time leaving as I was asking him to leave.

I’ve caught some that were nice, some that were mean as hell. Same with kings. Racers, on the other hand...

Pretty docile in my experience. I love rat snakes. Got one that hangs out in the bricks and rocks that make up my outdoor kitchen. He/she makes sure there are no rats/mice there. I live in the country. Lots of mice out here.

I have almost stepped on one and he didn't even move. But if you try to catch it, he will enthusiastically turn to defense mode.

Some are quick tempered. I have picked up 3-4 footers that didn’t strike a single time. I have also been bitten by plenty. The only Colubrid that I shy away from are Diamondback Water Snakes. I’ll bleed every time I try to catch them, unless it’s cold enough.

One my kid caught and kept a few years back was a mean little bastard and would bite you for looking at it crooked.

In comparison a python I bought him was as gentle as a kitten and just wanted to be up against something warm.
