What’s the issue with such a lack of quality FG in NFL Football? Every time you turn around a kicker is missing a kick, getting cut from the team, etc....

Moving the extra point back exacerbated the issue

Minny's kicker fricked them.

Small errors can make for huge left/right variances.

Timing is also critical. From snap to hold, that is never quite the same. Factor in the crazy speed of an NFL block team, and its a nightmare.

Oh yeah... don't forget wind, field surface, altitude etc etc.

Its much akin to a golf shot.

The concept is simple but hard to execute.

Kickers are better today than they have ever been.

Absolutely.

Hall of famers in the 70s were making 67% of their kicks. Hall of famers in the 90s made 80% of their kicks. Most kickers would get cut for making 80% of their kicks today.

Today’s kickers have unreal distance, every week you see guys kicking from the logo with room to spare.

But if we’re talking about close-in shanks, I think moving the xp back has fricked with their heads. The league took what was a gimme tap-in and made it a missable two-foot putt.

I really believe it’s given some of these dudes the yips.

I still like what they did with the xp. College should probably move out half that distance or so.

It has made the game more exciting. The extra point isn't so "extra" anymore. These guys have to actually earn their money now.

Look at Morten Anderson's stats. One of the only kickers in the Hall of Fame...

And he would probably get cut today with his accuracy percentage.

this year is turning out to be a little different

from twitter

The NFL field goal success rate is 79.9%, down from 84.7% last season.

That’s the biggest percentage drop off in the NFL year-to-year since the merger.

Extra points are being made at a clip of 93.2%, the worst in the NFL since 1979

Teams either need to focus on short range accurate kickers who usually get zero workouts or just start going for 2 /4th down on every possession passed the 50.
