The House Judiciary Committee passed a reauthorization bill for the 9/11 Victims’ Compensation Fund on Wednesday, a day after comedian Jon Stewart lambasted lawmakers for failing to attend a hearing on the bill.

The bill will now head to the House floor, where it is expected to pass, although there are concerns about whether Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., will take it up if it makes it through the House. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., said he was "imploring, pleading, even begging" McConnell to bring the bill to the floor as soon as it passes in the House.

Stewart, the former host of Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show” and a longtime advocate for 9/11 first responders and their families, called the sparse attendance by lawmakers "an embarrassment to the country and a stain on the institution" of Congress. He added that the disrespect shown to first responders now suffering from respiratory ailments and other illnesses "is utterly unacceptable."

You know schumer is lying, his lips are moving. I certainly would expect an explanation from McConnell if he chose not too.

One of my Buddies who went there to help with recovery has died in the last 12 months from a Lung disease.

This was almost certainly going to be the outcome regardless of Stewart, though I did enjoy his performance. He's definitely passionate about a good cause.

When he does, Chuck will praise himself for making it happen.

As I sit here today I can't help but think what an incredible metaphor this room is for the entire process of getting healthcare and benefits for 9/11 first-responders has come to. Behind me, a filled room of 9/11 first-responders. And in front of me, a nearly empty Congress.

Sick and dying, they brought themselves down here to speak... to no one! It's shameful. It's an embarrassment to the country and it's a stain on this institution. And you should be ashamed of yourselves for those that aren't here but you won't be because accountability doesn't appear to be something that occurs in this chamber.

Damn.

Wasn’t this 100% going to pass anyway? Why drag the sick down there for the hearing that was just a formality? Yes if I was one of those sick guys I would be upset congresspeople didn’t show up, but I still don’t understand why drag the sick in for a formality.

Has Stewart ever been as passionate with his words for the treatment of our military veterans? Just asking.

Probably not, but that is neither here nor there for the purposes of what he said to congress.

Whataboutisms, from either side, only serve to derail a conversation that you have no logical, substantial or pertinent input to add, but you disagree. Do better.

Does NY have such a compassionate fund established to help the city employees that are suffering?

Because it got torpedoed in 2015 so it's not hard to think it had a chance to get shot down

He has. When he was on the Daily Show he made a big issue of updating of the VA's records system from paper to digital to cut down on wait times for veterans. And he's done fundraising for veterans, I saw him on ESPN once doing that.

Good for JS. Of course I have to laugh because if given the chance he would leave those chambers and then Immediately go vote for socialized medicine without a second thought that the very people who cannot facilitate the care of these hero’s would now be overseeing the nations care. You see how they treat 9/11 rescuers. How are they going to treat Bubba and Lulu from Knoxville?

If the VA were in threat of getting unfunded, he would be. Stewart has always been a stalwart supporter of our troops (maybe not their missions) and the 9/11 first-responders.

During his 16-plus-year run at the desk of "The Daily Show," Jon Stewart trafficked in the same military-themed segments as many of his television brethren: He did pushups for charity, he went on a USO tour with a magician and a noted mailman, and he ... did more pushups for charity.

Tests of upper-body strength aside, one of Stewart's unique, lasting contributions to military matters may be his frequent, frustration-filled salvos at the Veterans Affairs Department. He's cranked out several "Daily Show" segments over the years that have have helped spotlight VA problems for a broader audience — an effort that's not gone unappreciated.

"I don't think there's a person in the media who's done more to elevate veterans' issues, and to push for policy change," said Paul Reickhoff, head of Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America, which presented Stewart with the 2013 IAVA Civilian Service Award.

I don't know how anyone could support McConnell if he kills this bill. He should be thrown out of office if he did this.

Jon Stewart is a solid guy. You may not agree with him on politics but when it comes to something that shouldn't be political like this or support for troops he goes scorched earth on everyone doesn't matter what color they are wearing. If they are in the wrong he calls it like it is.
