.300 blackout question.

Recently watched a video on youtube about caliber and damage in handgun rounds. Guys in the video were Federal and CCI (same company) development guys who work with the Federal and Military ammo development. A key take away was their statement of temporary wound cavity and effect on surrounding organs. Made it clear that bullet speed was more important than the caliber, ie., 2200fps was the magic number. The .300 in 220g is subsonic but only 1000+fps. Anybody got any info on the .300 220g in ballistic gels, etc? Thinking about a .300 blackout to keep in the house.

As you said, .300 with 200+ gr bullet will be subsonic and will not give a wound cavity like a rifle round.
Think of it as a .30 caliber .45acp.
You can get bullets with 110gr bullets that are traveling ~2300fps.

Nothing wrong with this choice and whatever grain bullet you decide to shoot will absolutely do the trick.

There’s zero reason to shoot subsonic ammo unless you have a suppressor.

yep also look into Discreet Ballistics for some expanding subsonic ammunition.

There is two kinds of damage from projectiles.
One is from the energy dumped into a substance. The other is physical damage caused by sharp edges and the projectile traveling through the medium. A typical high powered round, especially super sonic, actually does both. A subsonic round behaves more like a broad head. And, actually when heavier bullets are used can have amazing penetration capabilities.

IMO, the 300BO would not be my first choice for personal home defense. A short barrel 12ga shotgun loaded with OO buckshot, #4 buckshot, or #8 birdshot is devastating at short range. Most home invasion encounters will occur within 10-15 yds. ALWAYS know your backstop and what/who could be on the other side of the wall. A pump Shotgun and a pistol in the bedside table / nightstand is what many people use.
good video
another good video

I’m talking about at the local level... I should have been more specific.

I hate the pump shotgun logic. Why would you use a 6 round shotgun that takes two hands to operate as a self defense weapon. In a home defense scenario you are very likely to be using your support hand to do a task (opening a door, guiding children or spouses, holding a light, or fighting the intruder).

Some will, some won’t on both platforms

They're pretty evil. If you think about them opening up like that while spinning, it's like getting hit by a tiny airplane. Note that those are subsonic rounds too.

The discreet ballistic subs look awesome. Gonna try them in .308 on some hogs.
