I’ve tried to listen to them. They are generic and unoriginal.

And I’m a huge fan of Texas music and Texas-type music.

Bring the downvotes, fanboys.

There is a part of country music, that is not realized,by tons of folks, even some who love it.

That is not to say,,that it is not good.
Real Country songs are built a certain way,it's a challenge to make them. You either get it,or you don't.

Lots of folks use a country sound and instruments , there is something else though, that you must tap in to.
I can't explain it to you,or anybody else, you either get it or you don't.

I enjoy most of their stuff. I'm not in love with House Fire but it's ok.

7 & 7 and Ringing In The Year are genius

I know Lori loves them

I don't really care how we classify it

To me they make the most consistently enjoyable music in the entire genre.

I really enjoy the story telling/growth of Lori & Jimmy from album to album. You just don't see that anymore like we did in the 60s/70s.

I’d say it’s isbell hands down. And I’m a big fan of TT. Isbell can just flat out write.

There's really no comparison between the two. Jason Isbell is an exponentially better songwriter. They're not even on the same songwriting plane. Turnpike Troubadours is a watered down Randy Rogers Band.

ditto

Me-stinks (JMHO) Verlon Thompson trumps them with country lyrics.

TT is a decent party band...and that’s it.

They don’t move the needle as songwriters.

Earle
Simpson
Hayes
Sturgill
Childers
Isbell
Etc etc

Are you serious with this shite? TT paints a picture and tells a story better than almost anyone these days.

Go listen to The Funeral, Birdhunters, Sunday Morning Paper get back to me.

They are great, but so is Tyler Childers

Well my buckle makes impressions
On the inside of her thigh
There are little feathered Indians
Where we tussled through the night

When I's a boy
I’d drink and love and smoke and snort my fill
But all the while
I kept in mind the Lord’s redeeming grace
High on the hill where the fox horns blow
And down in the city where the heathens go
Catholic girl, pray for me
You’re my only hope for Heaven

I'm a stone's throw from the mill
And I'm a good walk to the river
When my workin' day is over
We'll go swim our cares away
Put your toes down in the water
And a smile across your face
And tell me that you love me
Lovely Lady May

Now I ain't the sharpest chisel
That your hands have ever held
But darlin' I could love you well
Til' the roll is called on high
I've seen my share of trouble
And I've held my weight in shame
But I'm baptized in your name
Lovely Lady May

and his best song......

Back before these calloused hands and all this work
We used to sit up at the flats
Acting like we'd live forever
Getting high and skipping class

Yeah I reckon we were heathens
But in her eyes we were saints
Now you're calling all the boys home
Heavens angels carried her away

[Chorus]
So I will follow you to Virgie
Although it hurts me so
To lay to rest this mountain beauty
The lord's called home
I can see her up in glory
I can see her through the pines

Back when all us boys were tryin'
To make sense of all these streams
I can see her in the corner
Singing along to all our crazy dreams

[Chorus]
AndI will follow you to Virgie
Although it hurts me so
To lay to rest this mountain beauty
The Lord's called home
I can see her up in glory
I can see her through the pines

I will follow you to Virgie
Because that's what us boys are for
To help you out when you get weary
And you can't go no more

And can't you see her up there, Cody
I can see her through the pines
Sayin' 'boys be good'

I really like the Turnpike Troubadours too. Are you familiar with The Old 97s from Dallas? If not check out their albums Wreck Your Life, Too Far to Care, Fight Songs. TT covered their song Doreen and TT’s electric guitarist pretty much rips off Old 97s guitar style. Old 97s can get a little more poppy than TT but Rhett Miller is an awesome song writer/story teller.
