He's not an average chef, he's a really really good chef. He's also a great business man. Is he the "best living chef" though? Not likely. I don't know how that's an "anti-Batalli rant".
Read the thread, YA.

I used to love Mario Batali. He was somewhat of an idol of ours until we got to meet him personally. Tried to talk food and it was very clear he was nothing but an average cook that happened to hit it big with a niche and the upcoming food network scene. Big fat redheaded dork who wears shorts in the kitchen and grotesque orange clogs. He didn't know a damn thing about the food we were cooking...and it was all northern Italian cuisine.
I was responding to this fool.

There's a big difference between the guys who win James Beard Awards and the personalities you see on television
Awards won by Batali
Babbo, Michelin Guide, One Star[40]
Three Stars from The New York Times for "Babbo Ristorante e Enoteca"
"Best New Restaurant of 1998" from the James Beard Foundation for "Babbo Ristorante e Enoteca"
"Man of the Year" in GQ's chef category in 1999
D'Artagnan Cervena Who's Who of Food & Beverage in America in 2001
"Best Chef: New York City" from the James Beard Foundation in 2002
"All-Clad Cookware Outstanding Chef Award" from the James Beard Foundation in 2005 (national award)
"Best Restaurateur" from the James Beard Foundation in 2008
Culinary Hall of Fame Induction.
So you were saying about the difference between him and those that win James Beard Awards?

If you read Joe Bastianich's book Restaurant Man, you will get a bit of insight on Mario as they are partners. It's a good read if not a little self serving.
I'd never pick a "best" because it's way to subjective. I'd say Mario is a very good chef.

Exactly...say what you will about his television persona, but does he strike you as the type of person who would partner with a total hack?

You had a strong argument until you stated PAul's as the best restaurant in new Orleans
Haven't tried them all, but K-Paul's is my favorite thus far. Better than August; much better than Commander's; much, much better than Cochon. I love Galatoire's overall nearly as much as K-Paul's; but the latter is more consistent and more flavorful. In fact K-Paul's delivers more flavor more consistently than any restaurant I've ever been.
It is a mite rich, however.

Bobby Flay, even though he punked my boy Ari Gold in Entourage

I haven't been to August but have no idea how one can say Galatoire's is much better than Commander's & Cochon.
