Irish friends are telling me so. Can't find a link to confirm, but they are adamant it's done.

Their 247 board has a thread saying it's a done deal from a supposed insider.

Lot of smoke around Freeman right now.
So Fickel supposedly has waited his entire coaching career for an opportunity at a job like ND and, this year, of all years, a G5 team is likely going to make the playoff and he won't abandon his team for that opportunity because he's in the middle of conference title week.
Damn... Dude really will never leave the state of Ohio.

Every year big jobs open up. I admire him for being loyal if that truly is his plan. He will get a shot at a blue blood soon.

The move has to be an attempt at keeping this year's recruiting class together.

Hiring a coach based on a single recruiting class is not a smart move.
The guy has been integral to their current success and they want continuity. That's an actual reason to hire him.

You realize this is his first season at ND correct?

Yes. You realize that he is integral in their still being in national title contention, correct? You realize that he was also integral in building Cincy, another team in contention, correct?
If they have hired the guy, it's not because of an impending signing class. It's his body of work and their wanting continuity.

Freeman is from Huber Heights Wayne HS (large public school down the road here), Ohio State, Purdue, Cincinnati, and now one year at Notre Dame. I never figured him as being someone the premier Catholic University would entrust with the keys, to be honest. I am happy for the guy, and I actually think he'll be all right, but just a crazy turn of events.
Interesting thing about Marcus Freeman:
Children: Vinny, Siena, Gino, Nico, Capri, Rocco
I don't know that he has any Italian heritage? I seemed to recall he does have some Asian ethnicity, though.

Him being good at Cincy is irrelevant. He’s been at ND less then one year. They’ve been to the playoffs in 2018 and 2020. He isn’t integral in the program ND has become. He is their current DC and might be an ok hire. But he’s really not that important as far as NDs recent success aka the past few years
It’s ok to admit you didn’t realize he just started there this season

tOSU wouldn’t have let him go if they thought he were blue blood material.

I like him and hope he succeeds. I just have to think they are rushing him to be HC and setting him up for failure. First HC job should not be ND. It’s hard to win at ND, and if you fail it sets you back too far to come back from. It doesn’t just send you on to continue growing as a coach, it’s a career killer when you fail there. Bob Davie, Ty Willingham, Charlie Weiss were all hired at relatively young ages. None have coached in years and only coached a brief period after losing the ND job with no success in their subsequent jobs. I hope I am wrong for his sake and ND’s sake, but I expect the job to be back open in three years if he takes over.
People will soon realize and appreciate just what a job Kelly has done there very soon.

This hire does not make sense. ND should put him as interim coach and see his performance during the bowl game.

The OC chose to stay at ND with Freeman as did the DL coach.
That seems to indicate unification with Freeman. That seems integral to me.
Now, suppose the cards fall in ND's favor for them to get into the playoffs and they manage to win it all...
