You have to nail the other coordinator hire no matter what the specialty is for the head coach, this makes no sense
Yeah and defensive guys seem more rare these days.
The coach just needs a guiding philosophy and replacing the coordinator carousel on the other side is easier. The problem with O is that he never had that. We went through 4-ish offensive philosophies 2016-2021. Bama keeps rolling b/c Saban ha an overarching offensive philosophy and the OC plugs and plays and maybe adds a little.

Map out the 7yrs of the CFB playoff, all 28 teams & their coaches, and it’s easy to pinpoint what the majority of them all share.
HCs with offensive minded backgrounds, and excellent QB play .
Are we ignoring Saban/Bama and Kirby/UGA?
You're overly relying on OU and OSU and their annual playoff apperances
Dabo is a big stretch and I see your vague wording is meant to include him
I understand your point, but it's skewed due to an incredibly small sample b/c the big boys have dominated the playoffs

oh ok, sounds like you have it figured out.

In all seriousness I prefaced it that mediocre is improvement at Iowa state but still. Only one season where he finished ranked.
I’d probably prefer Napier over him.

I’ve wanted Kiffin from the beginning. I’ve been swayed a bit by Riley talk, but Kiffin should be the hire.
Not sure he’s even being considered.

Saban has been a unicorn & I don’t think anything in college football has earned the right to be compared to Alabama.
& Kirby has not yet been a threat, partly because of his offenses
Dabo leans offense & I think their development of QBs & skill players speak to that

Jimbo, Helfrich, Brian Kelly (multiple), & Chris Petersen are all offensive guys who have brought teams to the playoff
LSU In their appearance propelled by offense.
Even so, Ohio St & Oklahoma should not be discounted.
The most common themes with these teams are great QB play, usually mobile guys. And offensive minded head coaches.

Losing in overtime of the championship game qualifies as “not yet been a threat”?

The argument for Amanda goes beyond the schemes. He has the demeanor for the job.

The Aranda autocorrects to Amanda reminds me of the Alex Bergman days.

The perils of hiring a defensive minded coach is that you have to nail the offensive coordinator hire. Outside of Nick Saban, who obviously gets the best players, is there another defensive coach that does this consistently & fields championship level teams? If so, let’s talk.
Kirby smart. Fat Chaney sucked. Monken isn't much better at all he's running a 2011 offense.

Idk. They had a lot go right for them that year: including most importantly, avoiding Alabama in the SECCG.
Wasn’t the strongest year nationally. Fromm was routinely trash in big games in his career at UGA

Coach O was 2-0 against Kirby by a combined score of 73-26.
They are having a great year this year but a lot of their wins have lost luster as the season has played on: Clemson, Kentucky, FL, Auburn
Curious to see how they match up in the SECCG & CFB playoffs with teams that have better QB play

Monken is much better than chaney.

This is going to be Georgia's best year to win a chip.

Dabo leans offense
He was a WRs coach but leans on Venables. His OC is pretty shite. They've just recruited 2 generational QBs back to back

You literally discounted the team who's done the best b/c they have a defensive coach
Riley is the clear cut #1 option. I'm not discounting offensive coaches. It's just after Riley, it's not that simple.
This is basically becoming an Aranda v. Napier, and the issue with this thread in that discussion is that Napier is FAR from established as an offensive coach and he's failed to upgrade ULL's QB situation. Napier is basically Jimbo-lite (really a recruiting-CEO guy who demands to run his shitty offense).
I'd take Kiffin over Napier in a heartbeat. Freeze, too. I just don't think they're realistic options given our situation.
Here is the one thing about Aranda that trumps most discussions about anyone other than the super elite. He's smart as shite and smart enough to not be stubborn. You used the argument about switching OCs after year 1 but I see that as a positive. He knew it wasn't working and moved on.
In terms of discussion Aranda's intelligence is clearly a cheat code/OP trait, and I've already said a while back (in Jimbo conversations) that I'm biased towards intelligence. However, being smart as shite is a legit positive and doesn't limit his offense at all.
Like I said in the other thread, Napier has shown himself to be a CEO guy who isn't very good at Xs and Os. The problem is he's so stubborn he continues to try to run his offense. That's a red fricking flag for the Napier v. Aranda conversation.

He’s the only one that’s been able to do it consistently. They are on a different plane than everyone else
Copying the one outlier isn’t exactly sound planning

They are 31-5 the last three years.
2-7 brings desire to change.
Are you changing 31-5 due to style points? Idk.
You change out a Levi Lewis if you have a Tua behind him. But for the most part you are ok with your Jalen Hurtd, They don’t have that luxury, exactly.

quote:Not saying much considering how few defensive minded prospects there are this year. Still, I believe you are sincere.
Disclosure: I like Dave Aranda, I trust Dave Aranda more than any defensive minded coaching prospect out there.
I take it for what it is. There's been very little criticism of Aranda because there is very little to criticize. It's a stretch to say his defensive mindset is a negative. Everyone comes from somewhere, but to suggest that Aranda's offensive experience level will result in a long term drag on his career as a head coach is weak. TBH, if I knew I had a secure position, I would have no problem hiring Aranda as an OC and would be very confident it only would take a couple years for him to achieve success. I'm not saying Aranda should be calling plays any time soon, but if anyone can figure out how to assemble a coaching staff and run an organization successful on both sides of the ball, I believe he can.
I also disagree with your main argument. I think that steady solid defenses build a sustained program as well or better than offensive mindsets.
Aranda vs Kiffin: Aranda had a couple missteps. He was in his first year as a head coach. Kiffin has almost made a career out of taking over new teams. Not a level comparison.
And if Aranda at LSU gets into the situation that OC under him is just a stepping stone, then that's a great problem to have. It will mean that he has reached Saban's level of success, and even then it doesn't mean he won't end up with a Venables type of long term coordinator. There's no reason why coaching turnover should be any different than for any other program. The more successful you are, the more you have to deal with it.
