This. The history of the terrible business climate in the state stifled so much business when La was set up for success with location and resources.

I have actually been trying to read that book for a while but couldn't find it and then forgot about it. Weirdly, as much as we know about the Nola organized crime stuff really is nothing compared to what we know about NYC, Chicago, New England, Florida and the other Midwestern families. Apparently there was a goat farmer war in Colorado involving the mob wayyyy back and they sent guys from all over out there to help the farmers fight. Also, I read something about a "school" in America for young guys ran by the Black Hand a really long time ago. Can't find much information about either but it was interesting to ponder.

One of my good friends in college who we all agreed his dad was in the mob lives on the north shore.
Had really wild stories about his dad. Said his dad woke him up at 2 in the morning in a full suit. And made him drive him to a 4 way stop out in the boonies. And drop him off and go home. And this is a guy who never jokes about anything.

MG does more for this city than anything else. Ask the hotel industry, or the food and bev people. And you'd be surprised how many dynamic people actually come here because of MG, not in spite of it. There's a krewe and a ball for everyone.

Right? Why can't we have both? We did for a long time. I love La and I love every city here (even if I like to pick fun at it) but we should all be outraged at how far we have fallen due to short sighted policies.

One side of my family talks about New Orleans in its halcyon days; they make it sound like a magical place. Unfortunately, it just seems like Detroit South to me. I don’t have much hope that it will ever trend back up in my lifetime. I love Louisiana for what it was and want to return someday, but that’s becoming increasingly unlikely.

I mean Nola is not at that level, and Detroit has had a few things trending up with the Quickens Loan guy trying to help the city but yeah, Nola can't get out of its own way. But that is the entire state for that matter. Would have been really cool to see the city back in the day.

Detroit has so much more going for it at this point. Downtown is being revitalized. Violent crime is slowly leaving that area (but obviously still bad elsewhere). Major rebuilding projects going on.

Marcelo family had the land between Avondale and GI which is called Delta Farms. I fished it often with relatives of Marcelo.
