Episode 2 random thoughts:

1. So glad they show off John's incessantly-playful, almost class-clown personality for all to see. I think for a lot of casual-to-non-Beatles fans, Lennon is remembered as always being this humorless anti-war activist/sex-drugs-weirdo-hippie/utopian-dreamer/sacrilegious-athiest, when in actuality, he was easily the less-serious Beatle of the bunch and always had been since the early days (as the Anthology 5-disc dvd documentary showed.) He plays around so much, so often, I'm surprised his humor didn't slip out in his music more than it did.

2. Get Back really did turn from a protest song lyrically into a harmless jam simply because they liked the flow of the final lyrics better.

3. La. Gov. Jimmie Davis' "You Are My Sunshine" was a big enough international hit that it was obviously was a memorable traditional song for the Beatles.

4. Every time I see Billy Preston, I think of his story of being a prodigious teen molested nightly by Little Richard during tours. Despite his smiles & success, he was secretly battling his sexuality with alcohol & drugs during this time period, and no one in the studio was aware.

it’s a spellbinding moment.
Paul starts strumming his bass like a guitar and within seconds the familiar rhythm of the song emerges and he has the complete chorus composed

it has to be seen to be believed

Midway through the second installment as I type this...

- Paul is at the height of his powers. Songs flow out of him like a river.
- I can't stand the prodcuer of the documentary. Very puncahble.
- George is so clearly stifled within the confines of his reduced role he's constantly looking for a fight.
- I keep wondering why George Martin isn't involved to smooth over the musical squabbles.
- Ringo would have loved to have been a Beatle forever.
- It's also interesting how early some songs were already in the incubator.

I think primarily because this project was intended to be songs they could perform live (without studio enhancements) which kind of made Martin a bystander. He was back with a vengeance for abbey road which I don’t think even gets made without him

Yup. Like I said before, I get why he felt like he did. But he just comes off like such a contentious a-hole most of the time. Like you said, you can tell he’s looking for a fight. It’s such a strange dynamic. Even in part one, Paul talks about how if they can’t work through some of this shite and make it work, then it’s the end for them as a group.

Ringo would have loved to have been a Beatle forever.

No shite. He knew what he had around him and knew it was heaven for him as a musician. Even though he didn’t participate much at times (I think it was Sgt. Pepper where he learned to play chess instead of participating in much of the music outside of recording), he knew a good thing when he saw it.

Surprisingly, he’s made an absolute killing with his post-Beatle career. You could almost argue that his was the most successful after Paul. His whole “all star band” schtick was a brilliant move for him, and he’s released records for almost 50 years (20 albums) and toured for 30+ years with the ASB.

Ok, question... Likely will get bashed, but does it get better?

I got half way through first episode yesterday and turned it off. It was nothing like the trailer, the entire first hour was them sitting around in the same spot with Yoko up John's arse.

What stood out for me, by the end of Ep 1, Paul is coming up with all kinds of songs and John is just an appendage, contributing almost nothing, as well as showing up late every day

I’ve only seen E1, but I’d venture to say probably not. It’s just footage of them in the studio, so you’re really not getting much more than what you’ve seen. Although I believe PJ said we will get the complete rooftop concert at some point.

But the teasers from Jackson showed so much more... Them up, goofing off, interacting, etc. Guess I was just expecting more than them sitting there in the same place for nearly an hour.

I think ep2 is a little cheerier and more engaging. Certainly the energy at abbey road is better after they move and then bring in Preston. But if you really didn’t like ep1 I’d just wait till tomorrow for ep3 and skip to the concert (which is incredible)

It’s weird how Yoko is constantly there. Like man you can’t let this dude work for a second and make music with his band?

That's 90% of what episode 2 is, once they move back to their revamped studio.

It is but that’s more on John than Yoko IMO. He’s the one that could be like “you just stay home.” And I get why it pissed the rest of them off. Having someone else there period, let alone a significant other who was (sort of) weird as frick, throws off the whole vibe. Even if she is quiet most of the time, which it seems like she was, it’s still weird.

just got a chance to watch ep2, it’s the good shite.
smiles all around, everyone engaged and the music is so great

really interesting moment at the end when Paul gets outvoted on the live show idea and takes it in stride, acknowledging that it’s a group decision but not giving up on the idea that the project needs a big finish, which it will get in the end

And that conversation secretly taped between john and Paul, wow

this episode is what was missing from the original movie. Night and day compared to the first two weeks

that discussion at the beginning with Paul and ringo about yoko was pretty enlightening. They understand that if there’s a decision between her and the band he’s choosing her, so they have to adjust

still it had to be really off-putting for the other three guys with her attached to his hip the whole time

Finally got to finish episode two.

That clip of the audio from the hidden microphone between John and Paul was awesome. And John calls him on his overbearing shite, which Paul admits to, and John admits he does the same thing. So they both get where George is coming from. That was a cool moment, and gives insight into how they got George back.

Paul talking about Yoko saying it’s not really that big of a deal and they just wanted to be together. But then you can tell there’s also some truth to it and some resentment there. Like when he told Linda “stay out of it Yoko.” Which makes sense bc John should at least be able to leave her and do band meetings alone. That’s ridiculous for sure.

John recognizing he was always late was good too.

It’s very telling that Paul seems to be the only one pushing things forward. John is out of his mind and Ringo is just kinda there. They work much better with an Epstein or Martin in control telling them to be there at what time and shite. Which is why for Abbey Road George Martin made them adhere to a schedule like they did early on in their recording career.

It’s cool watching John dick around. And you can tell he legitimately cracks Paul up.

It’s amazing the difference once they get back in the Apple studio. But you can see the contempt in George’s eyes every time he notices the camera.

Billy Preston’s reaction when John asked him to play and be on the record was very cool.

The screaming and moaning Yoko shite is even weirder than I ever thought.

You can tell they started seeing this as more of a job than something they love to do, even in the Apple studio. You can also tell that they all kinda know that this is the beginning of the end. It’s sort of poetic and sad in a lot of ways.

Watching them make Get Back is pretty awesome. Just how they think and how they can see the song and us watching it come together to what we know.

It’s also cool to see them dick around with little bits of songs that would end up being the Abbey Road medley. Also crazy just how much dicking around with music they actually did. Seems like they played different bits of about a hundred different songs.

It’s funny it seems like Paul wants to do some big show and nobody else really does. I’ve heard Ringo (and maybe even John) admit that in the end they were grateful that Paul pushed them so hard to do shite, otherwise it wouldn’t have gotten done and they’d have not made and done as much as they did. It’s also kinda cool to see Paul understand that it’s a group decision and not his alone, and while he doesn’t like it he knows that’s the deal and tries to respect it.

Really stands out how little Ringo says or contributes. He’s just always sort of there. It also stands out how little George does for the most part, but then when he does contribute it’s usually a relatively significant suggestion.

Yoko looks like the little girl from The Ring. She’s so creepy sometimes. And it’s weird as frick how attached and she and John are. It’s like she’s one foot from him at all times.

Really looking forward to episode three. And also to rewatching all of them after it simmers in my head for a few weeks or so. I’ll prolly try to watch them all again over the Christmas holidays or something like that.

How long is this thing supposed to be? I’m a fan, but just watching them doodle around for 15 minutes at a time gets boring as hell. The only really interesting musical bit in the first 2 hours was the genesis of Get Back. This could’ve been riveting stuff if Peter Jackson had the balls to edit it all down to 3 hours or so.

I will watch it this weekend

one thing I am looking forward to is seeing george on film where I can see what his hands are doing and listen to clear audio

george is subtle but he is the glue that holds it all together and fills in the cracks and crevices with his guitar work

paul was my favorite beatle until the last year or so, when I went on a george deep dive and he became my favorite. paul is all talent and personality and ego, where george was all heart. george just kept gettng better and better and better the more pain and angst he felt. one of the greatest “feel” guitarists of all time, not the most technical but beyond good enough

I was never a big john lennon fan, too dark and weird until his later solo stuff

ringo was the perfect drummer and personality for that band

That’s the beauty of this documentary. Most people finally get to see the real John Lennon, this light-hearted, sophomoric, incessantly playful personality, which rarely came across in his music or in his politics/interviews/appearances.

The dude was a total jokester and had been that way since the band formed. People old enough saw that side, then the multiple public controversies muddied/darkened his image all up. Now, old and new generations get to see his true personality in this doc.

I don’t understand how the other three could agree to have Ono just sitting there 100% of the time.

Bitch go home.

Every time I see George now I think of Rick Rubin's story he told on WTF With Marc Maron podcast.

“I have a funny story that Tom Petty told me. They were working on the Traveling Wilburys record and it was him, Bob Dylan, and George Harrison sitting together and working on a song. George got up to go to the bathroom or to step out the room to get a drink, and after he walked out Bob leaned over to Tom conspiratorially, seriously, not as a joke, and said, ‘You know, he was in the Beatles.’”
