That's awesome.

I just finished Ep.3 and while I've seen the Rooftop Concert before and the Let It Be studio videos before, watching them turn on another switch and perform live like the pros they were, was simply exhilarating.

Knowing everything that led up to it and all the hours they spent creating/rehearsing, it was like I was seeing the concert for the first time. I actually got a little emotional. Great payoff for a great documentary.

This! But I have to fast forward every time Yoko starts that awful shrieking she calls singing. I think she’s possessed!

I was in a Beatles cover band when I was a freshman in high school. My best friend who played guitar was a double for George looks wise. Oddly, another guy looked somewhat like Paul as well. We weren’t very good, but we had a blast.
My dad got mad a us when we tried to recreate the iconic picture from Abbey Road on the peak of his roof instead.
Abbey Roof as it were!

I had every Beatles album in vinyl at one time, but actually gave them away when I was older and married. Dumb move.

It's interesting the line "Get back to where you once belonged" almost became an un-characteristically clear/overt political comment mocking those who opposed middle-eastern/muslim immigration into the UK. In effect, satire of a Brit that might say "Hey Pakistanis, go back to your home country!" which unintentionally could have been used as an anti-immigration anthem by those they were mocking.

Yep. I had no clue to the story behind this song before that.

History shows that it worked out for the best. They'd look pretty stupid mocking those people right now.

I’m saving ep3 for tonite so I can get my shite done, build a fire, catch a buzz and get immersed in it. We are so fortunate this got recorded so well. It’s like a damn time machine

George makes a very interesting point in ep2 when they are talking about recording live, something about when they were doing albums and not playing live, that the final “take” is now preserved forever so the temptation is to keep fricking with it indefinitely to get it right. Whereas when songs are played live, they continue to change and mutate.

I just found that comment so apt as far as the reason they could not continue...that kind of perfectionism is better suited to a solo artist. What they could not do, and john/paul basically admitted it in that taped conversation, was allow the songwriter of a particular song to be the bandleader for that song. They couldn’t make themselves “not” be a group. And for all the highs of the subsequent solo careers none of them every reached the quality and quantity of even any single Beatles album.

Ok, question... Likely will get bashed, but does it get better? I got half way through first episode yesterday and turned it off. It was nothing like the trailer, the entire first hour was them sitting around in the same spot with Yoko up John's arse.

I can understand what you are saying in a way, but the awkward and boring moments still provide insight into their personalities.
If you played in a band before and are trying to come up with songs, there is a lot of sitting around and just wishing you were somewhere else at times.
At other times, someone comes up with a cool riff, and it’s magical.

Haven’t seen the last episode yet, but you don’t get a lot of the “watching him play” thing like you’re wanting to see. So prepare for that.

And he doesn’t say much either. Although he’s not as silent as Ringo is.

quite a bit of seeing how john fingers the guitar though, which was very cool. Especially when he does his lap steel solo on for you blue, and the lead guitar on I’ve got a feeling. The dude could play

I have been waiting so long for a documentary like this. So many things stood out to me that I know my wife didn't catch...but a true Beatles fan would.

The secret recording of John and Paul was fantastic. Powerful stuff. Like one of y'all said, both John and Paul acknowledged and validated George's resentment and recognized their own roles in it. I was spellbound.

One of them telling Linda to "Be quiet, Yoko" was a big LOL moment for me. That kind of told me that they accepted Yoko more than people realized. Yeah, Paul and Ringo's conversation about her was honest and raw, but they rolled with it. I did sort of resent Yoko's presence almost EVERY DAY, but she was not bothering John or trying to distract him and I like that for the most part she sat sort of behind him, out of his sight while he was singing/playing/cavorting to a song. Lennon was really loose and funny and could turn on a dime to seriousness with the music.

There were several LOL moments to me...I mean I literally laughed out loud. I can't even list them all.

It was strange to hear I Shall Be Released by The Band and Midnight Special, being played by the Beatles. It was strange hearing All Things Must Pass, too. I looked and found that I have several versions of them recording that, different time lengths, but I cannot find a recording of Isn't it a Pity in my collection, anywhere.

John playing and singing You Are My Sunshine when George returned was gold. Ringo joining in on drums and I don't know WHO else was singing along but this was not a band ready to call it quits. That change in scenery from the dreary Twickingham studios to the Apple studio brought on an instant night to day change in them. I love it.

I am VERY satisfied with what I've seen so far!

Yeah that’s one thing that stood out to me as well, now easily John just plays shite. He’s goofing around and being an idiot, then two seconds later he’s playing an iconic solo in Get Back. It’s effortless for him.

I do wish there were more clips of them creating and working on songs though. That process is cool to watch. I like that we get to see some though, and I know Get Back is unique in that pretty much its entire creation was caught on film.

Certainly the energy at abbey road is better after they move and then bring in Preston.

I wonder how much Preston was compensated for his playing on the album?

I don’t know if the clips of Paul playing the Long and Winding Road or Let it Be was the first times for his band mates to hear it, but I would have expected them to be more blown away by how good it was?
I remember Paul saying that in all of their years playing together, John only complimented him once on a song.
I forget what song that was.

haven't watched ep.3 yet but thoughts so far

George talking about Clapton was surreal knowing what was to come between them. He was obviously intimidated which didn't help his ego within the Beatles. George was at his breaking point

John just wanted a break, maybe out. But the media intrusion the demand on their personal lives. He was starting his recluse phase

Paul was just so driven to create and so used to John and George filling their roles his love of the process drove him but his love of the Beatles was greater

Ringo ,I think he knew it was over and just wanted to truth told, I like that he says that several times. He wanted the real story told because he knew he would be blameless

the end result is The Beatles broke up The Beatles. They had become such a big business so many people's livelihoods were dependent upon them. The Apple Movie division head was way too pushy about 200 arabs in a torchlit stadium, that was the type of thing forcing The Beatles to break away from what the Beatles had become

They weren't just the band anymore they were a corporation knowing what was coming with Allen Klein, Apple, their conflicting priorities , timing
it was inevitable that this was beginning of the end but they still loved each other as the lads form Liverpool

This series reemphasized for me just how talented these 4 kids from Liverpool were that ended up impacting the world, from the the songwriting to the singing to the musicianship.

-I was most surprised in this series to see that all four could play piano, particularly Ringo who was competent. However, Paul was simply on another level.
-All four get on the drums, although John is admittedly lost, but could keep the beat with the bass drum pedal.
-All four were seen with a guitar, but it's unclear if Ringo was actually playing it.
-Paul, John and George were all shown playing bass.

Had this documentary been about the Sgt Peppers album, who knows what other instruments we would've seen them play capably.

yep. It is insane the amount of great music they put out in less than a decade before they even turned 30.

And the template for how that amount of wild fame fricks people up. It flamed out so many. Including these guys. It is a crying shame that they could not get their shite together and reunite for a few shows. John was alive for a decade after, but a decade can be a blink too. He was married and raising a kid.

But even after his death. The 3 remaining could not do anything??

Maybe that goes back to the fame? Imagine the fame involved for any of us to have a campfire conversation recorded with your friends at 23-28 years old. Just recorded, then have Peter Jackson take it apart and piece it together 50 years later.

Same goes for when George is playing his songs, there were no real compliments. Paul even nonchalantly walks out while "Something" is being created. Later, John and the engineers were discussing which songs had potential, and John says, "George has got a good one". That's about as close as it gets to a compliment.
