A&M pulled Jackie Sherrill from Pitt (then a major independent power), Franchione from Alabama, and Jimbo from FSU by throwing a shitload of money at them. The current insane jump in salaries is fairly new.

When A&M hired Jackie it was considered nuts to give a guy a million dollars over a multi year deal but that soon became the standard for coaches at big time schools. Then when A&M hired Jimbo it was again considered crazy to throw first $75 million at him and then a raise that made it $100 million (which was done specifically to keep LSU from taking him b/c we saw the writing on the wall w/Coach O). Now the standard for nutball salaries is set and big time coaches are going to start demanding $7-$8 million per year as a baseline and if you offer them a couple million more than they are getting at their current school you have a great chance at snatching them away.

Also, this is not to say A&M is special by being the standard setter w/salaries. If we hadn't gone nuts w/ours somebody else would have done it. It's just what this sport has become w/the crazy money all the schools now get from TV.

LSU has done this once before and it worked out pretty well for us all things considered. You’re probably too young to remember.

What I find hilarious about coaching salaries is the disparity between top pro coaches and the young phenoms they have to shepherd into the NFL world.

Bill Bellichick makes $12M year — Stephon Gilmore $16.2M.

Sean Payton $9.8M — Michael Thomas $19.25M and he hasn’t played in nearly two years.

Pete Carrol $11M — Jamal Adams $17.2M

Etc etc etc

Don’t cry about money spent that is not yours. Especially when many schools and pro organizations consider them investments. Trust me, they are not looking to throw money away.
