Searching for Military Records

Does anyone here have experience looking up military records of deceased veterans? My great grandfather was a WW2 Army vet who saw combat in France and was wounded there which led to his return home. I have some basic details from his service such as First Lieutenant, 95th infantry, Patton's 3rd Army. I'm trying to see where I could use this information as a start to find out more about his time in the service such as when he may have shipped out to Europe, actually entered France, etc.
He passed when I was 9 years old and luckily I was interested enough to have a few conversations with him about his time in the service then, but nothing too serious due to my age. I've been curious lately about finding out all I can. Any leads would be appreciated.

Military service records are archived in St. Louis, you can download the SF-180 form and send it to them. That can return his DD214 at least.

Army archives has all of the records. As a poster previously mentioned, just contact them and provide the pertinent information and they can help you from there.

Unfortunately a fire in the seventies destroyed a lot of records, so it's hit or miss.
Fold3.com is a good place to try. Subscription based, but it's reasonable.

My mother found out a lot of her father not from growing up w/ him but from the WW2 museum. Your grandpa sounds like a real dude. 101 War eagle

He should’ve registered his discharge at the parish clerks office.

Yea, good luck with that.
I’ve been trying to get a copy of my DD214 for months.

You will get more mileage if he was a Navy vet. Unfortunately a fire destroyed a lot of the Army WWII records in the 70s I believe. Still, some remain and there are outfits you can pay a little money to go in person and see what they have, presuming you have a name, rank, and serial number. A DD214 or honorable discharge certificate is enough to get you started.
Good luck!
Good luck!

Start here Fold3. There is a 7 day free trail, plus it may be free on Veterans Day.

Historically soldiers returning from war would register their discharges at the parish clerks office for safekeeping. Louisiana sec of state office has processed a huge repository of WW I vets and their discharge.

This. I registered my Dad’s info July 1. I check the “status” button every couple of weeks. Nothing so far

My dad just did this for my grandfather. He sent an inquiry thru the dod records office, gave them the details. Apparently there was a bad fire at one of the offices back in the 70s I think, so some of the records were literally copies of charred documents. And it took about a year. But eventually he got his entire service record and reproductions of all his awards and citations. Even got the citation and presentation box for the Bronze Star my grandpa got.
This was a big emotional deal for my dad because my grandpa never spoke a word about the war to my father until right before he died. It was neat to get the details about where he served and his units path thru Europe.
