This is discussed on a recent RLM ReView of The Blob. How staff scouted small towns and found Abbeville, and they speculated one of the reasons was because the graveyard was next to the football field. It's there on satellite, as well as the manhole cover, etc.

The 2 best movies I’ve ever seen that were filmed in New Orleans are The Cincinnati Kid (Steve McQueen) and Hard Times (Charles Bronson).
