If you were to purchase a deer hunting rifle today, which caliber would it be considering ammo availability, accuracy, etc. ?

I currently have a 270 win and 7mm WSM.

When answering a similar question a few years ago I stepped “down “ in recoil.

7mm-08 6.5 Creedmore and .308 are still very potent but much friendlier to shoot, and are short action calibers for friendlier handling.

I think you pretty much have it covered with what you have. With that said I’m partial to something in 30 caliber so maybe 30-06 or if you like the WSM’s a 300.

7mm-08 pretty much duplicates the old 7 x 57 , an icon of the good ol days. Strong hunting history .

7 x 57

My dad bought a Browning Safari 7x57 back in the late 80’s from a guy. My dad collected them at the time. I think he paid $850 for it back then. He wrote browning to find out how many were made. Turns out there were only 8 made in that caliber in the Safari grade. Gun is worth probably 10K today. Great Mauser action gun. Still NIB and never been fired.

You aren’t going to top the .270 win, which you already own.

There are well over a hundred calibers that will kill a deer just as good as the next and and a few cold beers next to a kick fire and we could argue for and against each one , but with the current ammo situation 308 seems to be the most readily available so that would answer your question the best

considering ammo availability

.308 is about the only option.

.308. I just bought my nephew a Ruger American in .308 so he can actually hunt this year since you can't find 7mm-08 anywhere for a decent price.

.243 will take care of any deer you encounter. Ammo is still available and recoil is minimal.

As others have noted, .308 is probably the most readily available right now and will definitely take deer. Recoil is not excessive but certainly more than the .243.

Good luck!

I'm just glad I bought a pile of my 30-06 last year. Honestly though, the muzzleloader is more fun to me.

Why would you buy that when they make a 338-378?

I had a 270, 7mag, 7mm-08 so I just recently bought a 6.5 Creedmore because of ammo availability and wanted something new. I stay away from 30 caliber because everybody else has those. Even my Marlin lever action is a 35.

I think you're taking a chance with anything less than a 105 mm Howitzer
