The things that made Chloe Zhao's indie movies special didn't translate to massive blockbuster filmmaking

Seriously, what a snooze. Fresh off of winning the Best Director Oscar for "Nomadland," Chloé Zhao has upchucked one of the MCU's worst movies in ages.

Eternals may not be the worst of Marvel's movies, but it's undoubtedly the most disappointing.

You walk out in the depressing realization that you've just seen one of the more interesting movies Marvel will ever make, and hopefully the least interesting one Chloé Zhao will ever make.

The depth of feeling helps counter the choppy storytelling in this new tangent in the MCU narrative.

Can't these movies do anything else? Is it too much to ask the most dominant kind of cinema on the planet to shake things up and challenge itself in a more significant way?

It's a different kind of superhero movie; not to everyone's taste, but made for us all.

Chloe Zhao's next project is a Chicken 4 Dayz immersive product placement.

I'm surprised. Usually, a cast with forced-diversity would've garnered an automatic 93% by the paid RT pros.
I probably won't see it until it comes on for "free" on Disney+ in a few months, but I don't have high hopes based on those meh trailers. Has a Wonder Woman 1984 gutterball/swing-&-miss feel to it.

The only explanation for those reviews is toxicity of the critics and their racism and misogyny.

It's an epidemic in movie critiquing and the biggest threat the film industry as a whole.

Same here, nothing stands out to me as to why I should watch this film.

So shite made for the Chinese audience they mean.

How can this be?? The Eternals is the first MCU film to feature openly gay super heroes!
All these reviewers must be homophobes! Damn them!

Exactly. Which means it’s likely even worse than the low current score would indicate.

Good question. They're maybe C or D level characters in comicbook lore. The critics were probably just excited about an IndieChick getting a crack at a Marvel blockbuster.

Collected Marvel comics when I was a kid and I can't tell you one thing about the Eternal’s other than Thanos was kind of one (Deviant, I belive) and they have something to do with the Cellesetials.
I remember when the mainstream media finally started hearing about characters like Iron Man and THOR, etc, like they were some kind of obscure comic nerd lore because they werent the X-men or the big two from DC. Little did they know that the Avengers and Thanos stuff were pretty legendary and mainstream across all the old cartoons and Marvel products in the 90s.
But the Eternals are a different story.
First, you jusy gave a $100+ million movie to a female Indie director from China, who basically has only made a couple little character movies and they aren't even very good at that.
Second, you have no star of the film, at least from the previews. You tried to make some United Nations utopia cast without marketing a big traditional star as the focal point of the film. Angelina Jolie is a big name, but she is by no means able to carry a film like this, plus she was barely mentioned in the trailer, so nobody knows what it's even about other than a bunch of generic looking castings with no bad guys anyone knows about and no heroes anybody knows about.
It honestly looked like some bad studio tried to make a Marvel movie and just made up a bunch of random heroes to avoid copyright lawsuits.
There's nothing about thag movie that makes me want to go watch it... Especially when you have shite like Dune on the market right now spoiling everybody and showing the world how high level artistic directors with a track record of quality films can make unique blockbuster type films that don't feel stale and repetetive.
There's actually nothing on the Marvel horizon that looks appealing in the least. They're in trouble long term.
DC could have easily snatched their momentum if they had just given Snyder the keys to the kingdom and advanced his Darkseid/Justice League ideas, but it seems they won't be doing any of that.

I like Zhao's indie stuff but this was a huge change of pace for her. Maybe not a movie that is in her wheel house.
No shame in it. Not every small film director is cut out to make big budget blockbusters.
If I was a big wig at Disney, which I'm not, I'd have those small movie directors looking to make the step up do an episode of a Marvel or Star Wars show on Disney + just to see how they handle it. One bad episode of Loki is disappointing but not nearly as damaging as one bad big budget movie going down the tubes.

I read it was pretty damn woke and that Kumail Najiani (spelling?) was the best part.
