Seriously, what object meets this definition?

The Mona Lisa, the Declaration of Independence, a dinosaur skull (as someone else mentioned), the Hope Diamond, the original Darth Vader costume, a Honus Wagner card…

Tons of things that are cool to just have.

Given your totalitarian conditions, whatever it would be sounds totally worthless to me.

I asked for an object with no purpose… Globetrotter you may very well be the single dumbest poster on this board to bring that up as an object with no purpose. Please get a vasectomy as soon as possible. If you managed to graduate from Jr High thinking this, nevertheless high school or college, then they should be embarrassed. Seriously, this might be the dumbest reply I’ve ever received on this site. That is certainly one of the 10 most important and affecting documents ever. You’re an idiot.

There are a lot of things that had a purpose at some point in time but don't anymore. Lee Harvey Oswald's rifle had a purpose on 11/22/63 but wouldn't if it were sitting in my house. It would just be a cool thing to have and something that would likely go for millions if auctioned because people like owning cool shite even if it does nothing but sit there.

The original DOI served its purpose over 200 years ago. There are a trillion copies of it and all it does now is sit on display for tourists. The functionality of the U.S. government would not skip a beat if something happened to it.

My point is not hard to understand.

For some reason my mind took a dark turn - since it can’t be used/sold, the value has to be in the object’s mere existence and location.

So it would stand to reason that the severed head of someone truly evil would be a candidate.

I guess I’d go with Xi Jinping

Not sure if this fits your ridiculously restrictive criteria, but I’d take the bomb release handle off of the Enola Gay.

Edited because my stupid arse apple product corrected Enola to Ebola

The no practical function takes out a lot of items like guitars, swords etc. Maybe one could have those if the function is never used, guess the is the OP's genie's choice.

If I could have an item if it could never be used for its function it would be one of two.

The first would be Paul Newman's Rolex 6263 Daytona

Or Michael Schumacher's helmet from the 2000 Japanese Gran Prix when he clinched the first world championship for Ferrari in 21 years

A tight reading of the OP's criteria really lends itself to art:

My personal choice would be Vermeer's Girl with the Pearl Earring

However, I would choose The Persistence of Memory by Dali for my wife's enjoyment instead:
