I'm still shaking my head at this utter nonsense:

quote:

The Experts Somehow Overlooked Authoritarians on the Left Many psychologists wrongly assumed that coercive attitudes exist only among conservatives.

quote:

Donald Trump’s rise to power generated a flood of media coverage and academic research on authoritarianism—or at least the kind of authoritarianism that exists on the political right. Over the past several years, some researchers have theorized that Trump couldn’t have won in 2016 without support from Americans who deplore political compromise and want leaders to rule with a strong hand. Although right-wing authoritarianism is well documented, social psychologists do not all agree that a leftist version even exists. In February 2020, the Society for Personality and Social Psychology held a symposium called “Is Left-Wing Authoritarianism Real? Evidence on Both Sides of the Debate.” An ambitious new study on the subject by the Emory University researcher Thomas H. Costello and five colleagues should settle the question. It proposes a rigorous new measure of antidemocratic attitudes on the left. And, by drawing on a survey of 7,258 adults, Costello’s team firmly establishes that such attitudes exist on both sides of the American electorate. (One co-author on the paper, I should note, was Costello’s adviser, the late Scott Lilienfeld—with whom I wrote a 2013 book and numerous articles.) Intriguingly, the researchers found some common traits between left-wing and right-wing authoritarians, including a “preference for social uniformity, prejudice towards different others, willingness to wield group authority to coerce behavior, cognitive rigidity, aggression and punitiveness towards perceived enemies, outsized concern for hierarchy, and moral absolutism.”

This really strikes me as the ultimate in gaslighting - for decades. Do you know a single person who thought left wing governments couldn't be authoritarian? In my circles, I would say it was a casual belief that left wing governments were almost by definition authoritarian.

Well, they love to classify, say, Stalin as "right wing". But what would be more left wing than attempted total communism?

Fair enough. Who else?

It just seems the big and famous authoritarian murderers implemented left wing ideologies: Hitler… socialism, Lenin, Stalin, Mao…communism. Xi…communism. Castro…communism. Kim Jong Un…maybe he’s a right wing dictator? I guess Muslim leaders could be considered right wing.

I wish someone could name one way Trump was authoritarian. In which way?

The thing about Trump, is you could live in California or NY his entire presidency and you would be affected by Trump zero. You could be as progressive as you would like in your state, and your state could act as progressive as you would like.
Can anyone name one instance of Trump going into Cali or NY and interrupting their progressive policies?

Now currently you can live in FL or TX and the effects of Biden are everywhere. You can't even bring up issues at your local school board anymore without Biden's Gestapo coming after you.

...but they do agree on the presence of seven or eight genders along with encouragement of prepubescent gender dysphoria. What a clownworld.

A dusting of reality is in order. Let's schedule the next Society for Personality and Social Psychology Symposium for these imbeciles in Pyongyang. ....or perhaps Communist Dictatorships are now deemed "right-wing" as well.

"it is literally impossible for the left to be authoritarian" - the left, probably

they know it's them. they are willing to win by any means necessary. they will sacrifice their conscience and even sacrifice you.

This was written by a Democrat who is scared of being guillotined by the Jacobians the Democrat party helped to power. Is it Bill Maher?

I've been shouting this for at least 20 years. Every single agenda item of the DEM party is devoted to "obtaining absolute power - even if it means ruling over a 3rd world nation." Nothing else matters.
Their only tactic is venal bribery and outright propaganda.

Right. They are also, as usual, blatantly mischaracterizing the “right” as it exists in the United States. There is no meaningful far right in this country. Libertarians count as “right” here.

We are accelerating towards hard left-wing authoritarianism while hand-wringing about an imaginary far right.

It bears repeating for the millionth time, the left has to pretend they don't know things.
