Best Mountain Towns to Visit - Summer

Trying to plan a trip for late Spring or early Summer. Thinking Telluride just because it looks beautiful and getting there allows you see some cool stuff along the way. Really just want a beautiful mountain town with scenery to relax, eat, drink, hike, smoke, etc.
If Telluride I may do Ouray on the way there as well. Would consider Montana, Wyoming or somewhere else if theres enough to see and do. Glacier National Park area looks nice but not sure what town is best.

Tahoe would be up there for me.

Consider Leadville or BV.
I could keep you plenty busy just in Lake County (Leadville area).

all have spectacular pros and very few cons, if any

I vote for Telluride and surrounding area. In addition to all of the scenery and outdoor activities, there is a lot of good food in telluride/ridgeway/ouray.

Grand Lake to avoid crowds. You have access to all the trails on the less crowded side of the park. There are a few good restaurants.

Salida....it's not over run with tourists like most Colorado mountain towns.Lots of hiking and rafting and a nice little town with a few brewpubs, a distillery and a few dispenceries.

The recs in here are great. I’ll throw Breck into the mix as well, it has the liveliest restaurant and nightlife scene in the mountains in CO. It is also for my money the most beautiful mountain town in CO, although I haven’t been to Telluride or Ouray yet.
It does get a bit crowded. BV and Leadville are your best bets if you don’t want crowds.

That entire area is great. Tried to take the family and went to Durango a few years ago during the fire, which was absolutely nuts but we went anyway. Drove up to telluride and tried to spend time in Ouray but too Smokey. We need to plan another trip over that way sans the fire.
Another gem is Grand Lake, CO. It’s on the backside of Rocky Mountain National Park. So you have access to the park, but also can go see Winterpark and some of the other surrounding places.

Couer d'Alene and Sandpoint, Idaho. You can't smoke there but you fly in and out of Spokane so you can buy there.

We were in Breck this summer and rode the Leadville train. What else is there to do near Leadville?

Same as everywhere else in Colorado during the summer… hike, raft, bike.. anything outdoors

Can piggy back on the others and say Telluride/Ouray. Loved both. Not sure on timing but it was still snowey at the upper elevations when we went in late June. If you didn’t plan on doing any high elevation hiking/jeeping it won’t affect you.
We also really enjoyed Boulder and were there part of two days.

We drove from Baton Rouge and spent two weeks visiting Santa Fe, Durango, Silverton, Durango, Ouray and Telluride. Its really hard to beat Southwest CO.

Yep.
You can hit the trailhead for seven 14ers from Leadville. Or just hit the "low" elevation hikes around Turquoise and Twin Lakes. Good fishing in the Arkansas and most of the lakes around are stocked. BV is about 40 minutes away, and there are rafting tour companies all the way down.
Plus a day trip to Breck or Aspen or Vail is 90 minutes away at most.

Are you still living out there, or did you go back to Louisiana ?

Got the option to stay through the holidays (white christmas would be cool) but then we're coming back south. At least until it gets hot again.

It's amazing. Stayed just outside Whitefish, which is about 1/2hr drive to the park. Going to the Sun Road scenery will blow you away.

Whitefish is the one town I’ve considered seriously outside of Colorado. I’ve done most of the ski towns within 3 hours of Denver so looking for something new.
Looking at pictures I just can’t seem to find anything close to Telluride and Ouray that compares. For those that have done that area which town would you sleep in or would you split it? Few nights in each to explore or stay entire trip in one town and explore during the day.
