This afternoon sewage backed up into the tub. It wasn't much, but the last few days the tub has been draining a little slower than usual.

I just scheduled an appointment with Roto-rooter, but just how big of a problem do I have on my hands?

That's God's way of telling you that you're full of shite and should stop posting. Better take the warning and log off forever

You probably have a hard cake somewhere down the line. Fill up all your bathtubs, open drains at the same time and snake from drain end.

Had this problem when my genius of a wife (no pics) poured grease down the drain

This happened less than a month after we bought our house back in 2014. It ended up being a collapsed terra-cotta line between our house and the road. Our house was so old (~80 years) that it didn’t have a main line clean out, which complicated things. They added the clean out and bypassed the ancient terra-cotta with pvc and everything has been fine since.

Is there any chance your wife just took a shite in the tub?

Get to closest opening to your septic tank and dump a 5 gallon bucket of water as fast as possible. Should have a cap outside pretty close.

Are you on city sewer or a septic tank?

Yep.

Root ball in the line from house to street.

Had to replace that section of line (crack was letting the roots in).

Been there done that. It’s a clogged sewer line. Open up your cleaning port outside and it’s likely going to be full

We did. Ours was in the basement bathroom. Had to flush the clean out, heard something pop after a few minutes of running water.

Last time it happened to us it was the tie in between the tub and the toilet to the main. Daughter had been flushing those “flushable” wipes and it caused a backup in the tub to show first. Just needed a snaking involving taking off the toilet. I’ll do it myself next time. $300 is probably what you’ll be paying

Sewer system is full and needs to be pumped out or your line is clogged.
