re: Would NASA ever admit to a mass extinction-causing asteroid being on its way?

Of course not. Why bother? By the time they figured it out more would probably be lost by the chaos of trying people trying to do something about it. The average joe could do little to protect themselves and at that point governments primary responsibility would be to do whatever they could with the time left to try and ensure that the species survives it. Telling people would make that task much more difficult as infrastructure would completely break down.

The Government doesn’t admit to anything that makes them look bad/incompetent/evil unless forced to.

Maybe not NASA, but surely someone in the private sector would notice it.

Well if an asteroid was about to smash earth into smithereens, all you sobs could finally admit to boning fat chicks.

Time to watch “with out warning.”

Spoiler: NASA isn't the only agency watching the skies. There are agencies from other governments as well as educational institutions around the world keeping track of such things.
Someone, somewhere would mention it.

I feel like the ability to spot a “mass extinction causing” asteroid is not exclusive to NASA. Like can’t a regular space nerd with the right equipment do this?
GO GET MY GODDAMN PHONE BOOK

Nobel prize 2015 - Ivermectin
Only thing similar to a horse in this post is you jackass. Take the leftist blinders off and stop spewing crap about a proven medication. My wife has recommended Ivermectin to 20+ people over the last 5 months and everyone of them, including several elderly people showed marked improvement in less than 48 hours. Stupid leftist.

It’s the the same thing on the rant with everything turning into a woke leftist thread.
Why can’t LSU run the ball
Second comment because of their damn woke leftist policies

Would NASA bring themselves to admit to it if they had the data?
Dang man, do you even Wolf-Biederman?

Even if an amateur astronomer discovered it, seems like NASA would calculate the trajectory first. Once the situation is known, do they have a contingency plan in place to begin silencing as many people as possible to keep the information secret?
Edit: "Silencing" need not be any form of violence. But perhaps they would try to discredit other researchers out there who also discover the trajectory will result in an impact on Earth.
"Hey, pay no heed to those researchers. Our data clearly show that this won't hit Earth....What's that? No, you can't see our data."
Are NASA and the CDC/FDA related? Blood or marriage?

Assuming the government was the only entity capable of knowing this information and could keep it a secret, I think it would depend on how far out the asteroid is. 10 years away? No. But I suspect the government would announce it at some point to give people a chance to come to terms with it. Might only be days out, though.
If the government has developed a protocol for this, it would be interesting to know it. You want people to end their lives as they see fit, but you obviously also don’t want mass panic and chaos.

NASA doesn’t even know what it’s pronouns are.

I sure as hell hope not. The OT would be a shitshow right up until the final bang.

Can a regular space nerd calculate trajectory on the fly?
It’s not “on the fly” it’s a basic parameter of threat proximity like a hurricane but better because not nearly as many factors that can affect it.

NASA may keep quiet on it, but other space agencies in other countries would not. Everyone will not keep that from the public.
