How can anyone not like the LOTR trilogy?

I have met many who said they don't like it, hate it, can't stand it, find it boring.
Why? How? Please explain.

Modern moviegoers have the attention span of a coked out housefly

It's not my favorite. Thought it was too drawn out. I doubt I'd watch it again.
When The Hobbit trilogy came out, I waited for all three movies to be available before starting on it. Not the best series ever, but at least I didn't have to watch an incomplete story.

A lot of people have a reactionary revulsion towards anything magic, fairies, and scify as “nerd stuff”. They’re afraid people will think they’re “lame”, and avoid any kinds of of stuff like that because they think it will hurt their social image. As soon as they see elves or dwarves, they immediately check out because that sort of fantasy world holds no interest to them.
As for others, they simply have no attention span and find Fellowship boring.

I didn't hate it. Saw two of the three in the theaters but there's no way that I'd want to sit through them again and I can see why some people might not want to sit through them at all.
Hobbits and Orcs aren't for everyone.

I read all the books as a kid, was super excited for the movies, but couldn’t get past the first one. I found it boring. I fell asleep.

I was thinking just earlier today to put in “Fellowship of the Ring” on this rainy day.

I can certainly see someone finding it boring, as they're pretty long.
That said, I bought the Extended Cut Blu Rays as soon as they became available because I was happy to get even more of it.
And obviously, if that kind of fantasy isn't your thing, then it would be a brutal watch for you.

The Hobbit series isn't even in the same galaxy as LotR

I can watch them now and love them - every scene/line seems like an old friend coming home.
However...I DO think things like Game of Thrones have blasted them a little bit into the stone age. The characters are all basically 2 dimensional simply because everything is pure, black and white, good vs evil.
I don't actually like GoT better, but in many ways, it is more interesting, as you get to see real people in real political settings trying to strike the balance between self interest and good.
So, I could see someone objecting along those lines, especially if they saw more recent stuff first.

I have a friend who refused to watch Fellowship when it first came out because, in his words, "I don't want to sit through a 3 hour movie starring fricking Elijah Wood."
A week later, I caught that mother fricker watching Radio Flyer.

For the sake or argument:
Too long.
Too "epic".
Action that strains suspension of disbelief (dwarves, barrels, and river).
Utterly ruined when you realize that all Gandalf had to do was summon one of those big arse eagles, strap a hobbit on it with the ring, and have it fly to Mordor. For a wizard Gandalf was pretty fricking dumb.

Greatest trilogy AND greatest film fight scene of all time. And they hold up tremendously well. I’ll hear no argument against either of these, LOTR is a masterpiece plain and simple.

I remember people in the theatre being vocally pissed at the end of the first movie, like had they never opened a book? I honestly never watched the other two in full but I might one day, I don't rule it out.

Good timing on this thread. We just started a rewatch of LOTR. Two Towers is still my record for times seen in a theater. Think I did 4 times.
I had the first movie on VHS.

One of my favorite movie theater experiences of all time was watching FOTR. The trilogy IMO is the greatest of all time for what it is. PJ simply worked magic with the special effects and more Importantly the cast.

Having read the books several times over, the trilogy did a fairly good job.
Where things really become a hot mess is the adaptation of the Hobbit and making it into its own trilogy.
