Day 11 and still rocking my portable Generac 10,000 starting/8,000 running watts generator. First extended use for it and it’s a beast. Changed the oil three times already and about to do it again tomorrow and will change the spark plug and filters after all this settles down. Electric start and she starts up the first try every time so far. I’ve read so much bad about generacs but so far mine has been a beauty for me. Maybe it’s the whole house generacs that are shite?
What has gotten you through Ida?

I believe people are having problems with Generac whole home units. As far as I know Generac makes very solid portable generators.

I got through with a 15 year older storm responder. Ordered a Champion tri fuel due to the gasoline issue and the 5500 not having quite enough for the family. Probably going to get one of those inverters as well.

Briggs & Stratton Storm Responder 6250 wired into my panel through a 30a plug did great for me. Ran everything - (edit) central and three window units entire time. I have gas water heater, stove and dryer.

You did not run a central unit and three window units with a 6250 generator

‘08 Craftsman/B&S Storm Responder 8.5K/5.5K still running strong. Just ordered an Ai Power 12K dual fuel cause I need a little more power and wanted ability to run propane.

I know 2 folks that had their generac whole house take a dump. Still unclear wether is was maintained or not. One of them said, “I didn’t know they used oil.

I have a Cummins. It hasn’t been fully tested to be honest though.

Have a older Powerstroke 5000 that I converted to natural gas, but went to Costco and bought a Firman 9000 tri fuel that I hooked up to the house with a suicide cord and it's running its arse off. Judging from the amount flying off the shelves, Firman is gonna have a good quarter.

Generac 24k standby. It made it 6 days, 5 hours before the power came on.
My neighbor across the street had hers die after 4 days. She just let it run and ignored it, I think.

Generac 22kw. I just inherited the 5 year old unit that had only sporadic maintenance. Got under contract in July.
Blew a battery day 1 of Ida. Tech there the next AM to swap out and it worked like a charm. I did baby the motor and shut it down multiple hours per day. Never ran any major appliances microwave etc. only gas stuff. Overall I’m very pleased but I would like a less finicky machine if I were buying new.

Briggs and Stratton Storm Responder. 5500/8250. Bought it after Gustav and only had to run it once for about 6 hours one May because power was out and I wanted to watch an LSU baseball game. Never changed the oil until running it about 18 hours after Ida. Ot performed flawlessly for over a week.

I got shitty old generac 4kw. It runs a window unit, 2 refrigerators, a freezer, and my tv stuff.
Was hoping to upgrade but its always been solid.

2006 Coleman powermate 6000. Broke intake valve on last day without power after Laura. Bought new engine for $150. Flashed the field with a Jesus plug and a battery charger. Good as new.

We have a Generac XG 10,000 watt portable generator with electric start. It worked well to run everything in the house, but our house is not big (1800ish SF).
