Mine is more of an obnoxious roar.
I dont understand why air cooled engines must have shitty tiny mufflers. I know they are mechanically noisy but shite, gimme a big arse muffler anyway.

But that chart doesn't equal what you are saying in previous posts where Generac "does not recommend air cooled generators" for warm climates. A 1.65% deration per 10 degF above 77 equals to a 22kw derating to 21.279KW at 97 degF. I feel like your previous posts are disingenuously trying to make it sound like these generators were "doomed for failure" out of the box due to the environment of south Louisiana. That simply is not the case.

17 year old 22kW Generac (natural gas). Only problem I have ever had are it seems to eat batteries. I buy a new one every 2 years. If it is the slightest but low it wont start.
Also had to replace the starter last spring.
I change oil twice a year with Chevron 5w30, unless it runs for more than 20 hours.
Its been great.

well its already derated 2kw being in LNG.
but i have read where they are not rated for warm environments.
go google air cooled generator in hot climate. go read what the first couple links say where they warn about air cooled engines in hot climates.
i mean i used mine for almost 6 weeks after laura, but it had to be used with kids gloves. I will say the newer 22kw are much better designed but IMO air cooled is not meant for the louisiana climate.
as far as officially from generac...many of the dealers recommend liquid cooled for our climate. If it was meant for the our climate it wouldnt derate at 77*
not to mention generac uses the permissable 10% dip allowed by ul2200 for their rating. so that 22kw is 20kw when on lng and if you convert to amps and then back to KW you are looking at a true 18kw before temp or elevation derate.

I have a Durostar DS4000, with 4k surge and 3200 run. Picked up awhile back, never broke it out or even put oil in it before.
Put some Valvoline 30SAE non-detergent in, cranked right up. Ran for me, ran the fridge and some fans. My power came back and I lent it to my brother, who had a tree on the house and issues with the powerline from the tree.
He changed the oil (at least once), not sure what oil he used. Ran a window unit, refrigerator, TV and a few lights for over a week. Finally got power restored maybe Wednesday.
Reasonably quiet, enough power to take the edge off of things, 4 gal tank that lasted **EDIT- about 8 hrs with a pretty good load**.
Small enough to stick in the back of a small SUV, with one adult male able to pick it up.
Older model, as I said I'd bought it years ago. But continues to sell and get good reviews, seems to be a proven performer. Most reviews put it near the top for 'bang for buck'.
I've helped someone pick up the Ryobi 6500W generator at Home Depot after the storm, it worked for them.

Anybody with experience with a Firman 9400/7500 at Costco for 899?

good ole Briggs and Stratton 5500 bought after Gustav. Still looks brand new, still cranks on the first pull every time. I'd really like to get a Predator inverter that's slightly bigger so i can run my AC. I was able to run my 3.5 ton unit to keep the bedrooms cold, but only at night when nothing else was really on except the two fridges.
My only hesitation is that Briggs and Stratton is so damn reliable, and i get about 2 hours per gallon of gas on it with a 7 gallon tank.

Fwiw, the generac water cooled version has the same derating note.

So everything you posted is just opinion, not based on fact. Thanks.

I ended up using the smaller 2200 watt as it wasn't overly hot outside. Kept a bedroom cool and my adjacent office tolerable. Two fans moved air around the house well enough not to get stagnant. The generator also powered the fridge, freezer and electronics. I made one gas run which I ended up putting into one of the cars by the weekend.

A friend had hers take a dump and it was almost brand new. The generator end took the crap. Engine was fine.
