To his credit Mark Emert took over and ran the hiring process, we got Nick Saban.
Was Saban considered elite when he was hired?
Based upon what?
His head coaching record was 43-26-1 and had got beat by DiNardo in the Independence Bowl.

Then we let him get away.
He took the Dolphins job because he thought he could make it in the NFL. Nothing was going to keep him here once he made that decision.

To counter the points of miles or O being elite by using a simple litmus test.
Who would hire them if they were fired or stepped down?
Miles wanted to coach and couldn’t find another coaching opportunity for a good while before Kansas.
Coach O’s story is full of an interim who couldn’t get a HC job, prior to LSU. And if we fire him, I’m pretty confident he will follow same pattern as miles.
If Urban Meyer steps down from Jaguars every team in the nation across the board would fire their coach to have him besides maybe 3-5 schools.
Alabama somehow has had 2 of these transcendent coaches In it’s history , which isn’t a coincidence it’s something to do with what goes on behind the scenes

If you were a coach would you want to come into the SEC west with Bama as an opponent and have 2-3 yrs maybe to win? LSU fans are the problem. We pay as well as other top schools so it isn't pay.

With 25 years of mediocrity in between

I don't think LSU is a top 5 job, top 10 maybe. Coach hiring is not that different from buying a house which is decided by demand and supply. There are lot of coaches there but only a few hot names available each year, and you need to look at who else are looking for coaches. You can either have the vision to identify an up and coming coach that is under the radar or go to a bidding war with the big players. Alleva had the whole year to figure out a deal but didn't do so.

It wasn’t originally. It’s now populated with bozos that believe they have tremendous insight.

I think with an AD like Woodward, we will have a much better opportunity to hire an elite coach or a younger up and comer.

1. Louisiana politics
2. LSU fans with ridiculous expectations and quick with fire this person or that person, just like what is happening right now.

You do know Nick Satan was our coach at 1 time and lesticles was like 52 and 7 or something at 1 time.one of the most winning teams from 2002 to 2020

No. He was a 49 year old journeyman and his only signature win was beating number one Ohio State in 1998.

It is 100% a coincidence

Great coaches have even higher expectations. They idea that would scare off a coach is ridiculous and delusional. They want to be at a place with expectations.

quote:to be fair, I don’t know how extensive that search actually was. It appeared more that Alleva targeted a single hot name (Herman), was scorned, and immediately went to Orgeron as a fall back instead of expanding the search.
When LSU fired Les Miles, it was shocking to me of how hard it was to attract quality candidates?

Why is it hard to attract elite coaches at LSU?
It's not. You're basing this on the incompetence of Joe Alleva, after not snagging Herman nor Jimbo, throwing his hands up and hitting the easy button.
Miles was definitely an elite coach at a time at LSU after being an up and comer at Okie Lite.

Did the Dolphins lure Saban away or did the fan base push him away?

That anyone would argue LSU fans pushed Saban away is absolutely mind boggling
