Why is it hard to attract elite coaches at LSU?
When LSU fired Les Miles, it was shocking to me of how hard it was to attract quality candidates?

I’ve heard through multiple media over the years through radio, podcasts reading that the politics at LSU plays a part ?

Being that LSU is a top 5 school, where you can recruit majority of your talent within the state, that has won a championship with 2 seriously bottom tier coaches, it seems to me that it should be easy to get whoever we want that is available, but it seems to be opposite?

I vaguely recall on Landry football podcast talks about how Saban wasn’t always pleased with the way things were when it came down to politics/administration/boosters etc.

Does anyone with some deep LSU history/knowledge have any insights into why the job isn’t attractive as it seems it should?

I know firing O 2 years removed from the best season in program history doesn’t help, but there seems to be more than just alleva being incompetent

Louisiana politics is the answer.

There are too many hands in the cookie jar and too many chiefs who think they know best

It's not, Alleva didn't conduct a coaching search, he had 2 candidates in mind and when he realized he wasn't going to get into a bidding war, he chose the interim coach.

Our biggest problem has been the people we have doing the hiring.

To his credit Mark Emert took over and ran the hiring process, we got Nick Saban.

Others times though it’s been factions on the BOS. This brought Dinardo and Archer in.

Alleva brought O in as a hire of last resort.

I may not be that hard now that Woodward is here.

In the past too many people had their hand in the football program for a coach to come in and not have complete control.

Attracting them has not been the problem. Hiring them has. Spurrier, Saban, Petrino, Herman, Fisher we’re all attracted to the job. Only 1 was hired by LSU. Only one of those is an Elite coach and most programs have rarely hired an Elite coach. They became Elite after being hired.

Poor leadership and bad decisions, ie people like Joe Dean running things= bad hires

How do you know. Alleva didn’t really look.
He basically told Hermann take it or leave it because I’ve got Ed O of you don’t want it.

I don’t think he looked anywhere else.

I hate to be rude but the plural for medium is media. Not mediums. And this is a pretty good example of why no elite coaches will come here. Louisiana and Baton Rouge are backward and weird places. And this is coming from someone born in Baton Rouge, raised in Lafayette and earned two degrees from LSU. I love the place but it’s charms usually do not compensate for its backwardness.

Why is this board so immature? Ask a legitimate question and people downvote ? Isn’t their any quality moderators that can get rid of all the board behaviors that lead to making this board hard to read at times.

Each of the last 3 coaches have won natties.

By definition no other school has made as many elite hires.

It's hard to hire good coaches away from good places, and a lot of things have to line up for them to move.

LSU is as attractive a job as almost any, outside of like an Ohio State or a something like that.

Read the board daily and see if you can figure it out.
The same folks who are in charge of La Education, Roads, and Law enforcement are hiring and dealing with coaches.
Saban!!!!
Saban said he left Michigan State because there was no indication, by the MS Admin, that he was wanted.
Then we let him get away.

People don’t want to hear this, but we have trouble for a lot of the same reasons Texas can’t find an elite coach. Politics, too many cooks in the kitchen, and a quick trigger to fire coaches if they aren’t performing up to expectations. Yes, we can pay them handsomely, but coaches with families want stability. We probably have a poor reputation nationally for being impatient.
