I remember as a student touring the local post office and fire station.

Not sure if related, but a family of 5 from El Cajon just got back 2 days ago. News 10
Sorry, but that doesn't make it any better. This family was given safe harbor in the US 4 years ago. Then they go back to the country this past month? We should have left them there for being stupid. They were already rescued.

In 2017, while volunteering for a nonprofit advocating for immigrants, Amanda Matti, helped resettle a family of four in El Cajon, including a former Afghan interpreter, his wife and two young sons.
Matti, a Navy veteran and former intelligence analyst, helped furnish their apartment. She and the father became friends.
...
The family welcomed a new baby a few years ago.
Then, on the day the Taliban took over, Matti got a frantic message from her friend on Facebook.
The family was in Afghanistan for the funeral of a family member who passed from COVID, and were trapped in Kabul.

I went to the biltmore estate on my school trip. I don't think I would've been able to get my permission slip signed if the school wanted to send me to a third world conflict zone.

Remember that couple who decided to go on a bike ride through some really bad places? They're whole point was to show that Americans weren't all evil racists and Islamophobes. They both got their heads lopped off.
And she was something like 6 months pregnant, biking in some remote part of the stans and accidently got too close to another border. Idiots.
The ole "Im an American the country will save my arse"....not if you are too stupid.

It kinda sounds like these were afghan immigrants who were returning to their homeland for the summer. The article quotes someone who works with resettled immigrants.

EL CAJON, Calif. — Nearly two dozen students from El Cajon were stuck in Afghanistan as of Tuesday night trying to get back to the United States. Their school district said it’s pitching in to help them and their families any way that it can.
What should have been a simple trip to visit relatives over the summer, has turned into an alarming and uncertain situation for the students as they negotiate their way back to the U.S.
Several of our families over summer break independently decided to go home to Afghanistan and see their extended family. A lot of the families, their nuclear families are here but all their grandparents and everybody are still in Afghanistan,” Serban said.

Elections have consequences. When you allow an old man with dementia to steal a presidential election, what do you expect the country to turn into?
