The vets that I have spoken too like my BIL are not the least bit surprised that this is happening. He went there in 2005 thru 2008 . When he came back he told his superiors that we should get out or kill all of them. They looked at him like he was crazy . He said those people fricking hate us and the people in the Afghan government and will frick us at the most opportune time for them. Which meant the least opportune tme for us.

I’m sure everyone had a different experience so I’m not arguing at all with you. I was a G-4 in ‘07 in Balad. I worked with maintenance contractors every day and by and large, they worked hard and quite frankly put up with a lot of BS from command changing directions and priorities. Without contractors there is no way that base could have operated given the size and scope.

I feel betrayed but don't feel surprised. There are 19 million of us and at least 75% are true patriots. That should scare the frick out of any administration. I'm going down swinging

Honestly frick no. I felt like a pawn while in, doing the kings bidding under the disguise of it being for freedom.

Average American should not give two fricks about anyone in Afghanistan, then or now. Mission was simple...bomb the frick out of them and kill OBL. Minute we did that, should have started fricking packing.

frick Nation building. Only way that works is if you go full on war and devastate any and everything. But that part of the world has and will always be the way it is. frick em.

Nation building is a mistake! You either conquer, destroy, or stay home anything else is a disaster waiting to happen.

I remember watching us march across the desert. I looked at my wife and told her I hope this doesn't turn into another Vietnam. Our politicians turned this into another Vietnam.

I've known it since 1967. I was on a submarine in Rota Spain awaiting the loading of two Polaris Missiles to fill out our compliment of weapons. We received instructions to close up the ship and go to sea.
The USS Liberty had been attacked by Israeli fighter planes then a torpedo boat.
Google it. Its apparent we have no rights if the Deep State is involved.

Sadly this is true. Today's soldiers are viewed as disposable by politicians.

ETA Thankfully my father and uncles, who fought in WW2, are not around to see this.

Not a veteran, but a guy I knew from high school was killed in a firefight in Afghanistan in 2009. We weren’t exceptionally close, but he was a super nice, laid-back dude. There’s even a memorial to him in the middle of a roundabout in Broussard.

I couldn’t stop thinking about him the last few days and how senseless his death seemed then and even moreso now.

It's especially hard today thinking back on all those losses and wondering what was the point. RIP to your friend.

I’ve thought this a hundred times about my grandfather, also a WWII vet. He died in July 2001. I’m happy he didn’t have to see 9/11 and the shitstorm we’ve endured ever since.
