Jrpgs are my jam. My bread and butter. A nice cup of hot chocolate when I’m feeling blue, and by far my favorite style of game. This list is my personal favorite top 10 not the ones most critically rated although wider cultural significance and impact on the industry was considered slightly (an obvious example is FF7 which anyone knows will be on here)

10. Dragon Quest 11

Originally launched solely on the switch before being ported to more popular consoles, this game was such a breath of fresh air for the time period. A return to true to form turn based combat that made the genre. It serves as a sort of soft reboot of the franchise as well, at least in the switch version with the toggles but I don’t think that’s whole side plot gameboy style side quest made the cross over.

9. FF 12

Most people will resent this being anywhere near this list but it won’t be near as bad as reaction to what’s coming trust me. It was the first FF game to truly try to innovate combat for better or worse, told a more mature story about politics (until the obligatory god character comes in 90% through) and actually had the player character who we are suppose to see as the protagonist as homeless orphan

8. FF 9

This game does two things. It gives fans of the series a more traditional fantasy game following the cyberpunk vibes of 7 and 8 as well as serving as a swan song for the glorious ps1 era. It’s smart and fun and doesn’t take itself too seriously. It even fricking kills Vivi lol

7. Persona 4

Much less adored and likely even acknowledged than its world wide stunning follow up. This was an amazing game that actually tooled around and developed concepts only to later be fully realized in Persona 5

6. Final Fantasy 13 trilogy

Now this is the one I suspect I’ll get shite on all over. And I get it. I get and acknowledge the problems people have with this game and I’m gonna run down every single thing I like about it. The dialogue especially in the beginning is fully detailed without exposition expecting players to mine data logs. But if you play through again knowing what it all means I suspect you’ll appreciate it more. I also just love the combat system in these 3 games. Some of the best ever made imo.

5. FF 10

This game was my first real jrpg and holds such a special place in my heart. With everyone curious what square could deliver in the ps2 era man did they fricking nail it. Such a powerful story about love, loss, redemption, and sacrifice.

4. Chrono Trigger

This game, along with the outrageous marketing campaign for a game to soon follow it FF7, are basically responsible for launching the genre world wide and it deserves its due for that.

3. Vagrant Story/Ff Tactics tie

A lot of people either don’t remember or never played these two games. Which is a shame since they’re both powerful stories with important things to say and both do it it in very different styles both thematically and gameplay wise. Tactics even gives you a much better understanding of FF12 in light of the ocuria and the aeons (forgot what they’re called in this universe)

2. FF7 original

Ah yes, this game I can come back to time and again and get the feeling of a mother’s comfort. The first video game that’s truly went worldwide from a Japanese studio on a major console (in large part thanks to Sony for pumping more money into marketing than me at a Vegas titty bar). It quite literally set the stage for everything video games would become. The first open world as we know it, with any significance, the first to not be afraid to explore modern social and political issues seriously but in a subtle way that didn’t put you off, the first to show what narrative powerhouses video games could be. And it gave us the single best antagonist or perhaps even go as far as dual antagonist or maybe you could make the argument Sephiroth is an anti-hero controlled by Jeneva (crisis core does this). This game changed the “game” in so many ways we owe all we have today to it.

1 Persona 5

For any Jrpg fan this rest on its on laurels snd nothing I could say would ever do it justice. So I won’t.

Nice list - just curious, do you like Chrono Cross or DQ8? I would have trouble keeping those out… especially DQ8.

Old school Secret of Mana is OG but would probably be on most lists - obviously it’s your faves but just wanted to throw that one out there.

I do in fact like all those games and even the new mana reboot slash remaster on PS4. For me though Final Fantasy has, generally speaking, been the absolute kings of narrative where other franchises and studios have more a tendency to out do them in gameplay and I put a much heavier preference of the former.

Another couple franchises I had trouble leaving off was trails of cold steel and Tales of Berseria. FF Type-0 is an extremely good game as well and it’s no coincidence it’s the only M rated game fromcthem

If we aren't counting some of the Hybrids or JRPG inspired - Fallout 1, Baldur's Gate, Secret of Mana, etc. THe Tactics inclusion is weird, I'd probably leave those out as well.

Tier 1
Final Fantasy 6
Chrono Trigger

Tier 2
Earthbound
FF7
Xenoblade Chronicles
Dragon Quest 11

Tier 3
DQ 8
Super Mario RPG
FF 9
FF 10

You’re gonna great tier list without persona 5 even on it? Imo that makes you seem way to skewed to the older school than me the newer

Nice list. I don't really have a top 10 list devised at this juncture, but I usually have some favorites based on categories:

Action:
Tales of Graces f
Tales of Xillia 1 & 2
Nier Automata
Ys VIII Lacrimosa of Dana
Final Fantasy 15
Final Fantasy 7 Remake

Turned Based:
Super Mario RPG
Paper Mario The Thousand Year Door (favorite game of all time)
Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga
Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky SC
Legend of Heroes: Cold Steel 1 & 3
Pokemon Heart Gold/Soul Silver
Shin Megami Tensei IV
Persona 5
Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Red and Blue Rescue Team DX

Tactical:
Fire Emblem Path of Radiance
Fire Emblem Three Houses
Shin Megami Tensei Devil Survivor 1 & 2

Alternate (don't know if these count as JRPGs):
Castlevania Symphony of the Night
Megaman Starforce Trilogy

I've played JRPGs pretty much my whole life and there are still a crap ton of series I haven't even played yet (Breath of Fire, Lunar, Wild Arms, Grandia, Shining, etc.) Crazy to think about. I also haven't really found a FF game I was head over heels for, although I'd say my favorites so far are 4 and 10 (still haven't played/completed 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 9, 12, 13-2 and lightning returns). 7 is also really solid, especially with all of the secrets, but I was never in love with the overall presentation, which is why I am super excited for where the Remake takes it.

I find it odd that there is a “Best JRPGs of All Time” list that doesn’t seem to have a mention of Dragon Quest III or IV, Phantasy Star 2, Final Fantasy IV (II in US) or VI (III in US), etc.

Hell, Chrono Trigger is the only one on the list before the PSX.

Firstly, I made it clear these were my favorites so idk why you’re upset about certain exclusions. There’s far more than 10 great Jrpgs and some of the ones you mentioned are great games. I’ll make no secret about me being skewed more towards newer titles and especially FFs style of artistic design and narrative story telling then the older generations. Now if the list was “ Jrpgs who had the most impact on the genre” you’d be correct but as it stands it’s just a fun opinion thread. Even going further this will depend largely on your age. The PSX era was my first real era of experiencing Jrpgs

I don’t claim to have played enough modern RPGs to make a “best of all time” list. I know my limitations.

My exposure is mainly to the old NES days through the PS2 days, so a bunch of the modern stuff simply wouldn’t make the cut due to lack of exposure by me rather than quality.

Of the older stuff I played, what comes to mind is, in no particular order-

Dragon Quest I - Granddaddy of RPGs in Japan along with Dragon Slayer. Original version doesn’t quite hold up today but it pretty much created the genre.

Dragon Quest III - Multi-class party system where all your supporting characters could be customized rather than the cookie-cutter “fighter, mage, and mixed” party of Dragon Quest II. This had been done in previous RPGs but mainly in US ones like Ultima rather than a JRPG.

Dragon Quest IV - Broke a lot of conventions through its chapter storytelling for individual party members in addition to being fun as hell.

Phantasy Star II - Cyberpunk dystopian RPG which originated a number of things popularized by later titles such as FF7, such as an unavoidable permadeath for a party character.

Final Fantasy IV (II in US) - Square designed this as a killer app for the SNES and it lives up to what it was intended to be. Rotating party members, dark stories, the beginnings of a form of real time combat instead of pure menu combat, etc.

Final Fantasy VII - Much like IV was meant to be a killer app for the SNES, this was designed to be the same for the PlayStation and accomplished it, successfully bringing the JRPG from being ghettoized in the US to being a major genre.

At this point, my experience drops off because other titles I have played run from not worthy of inclusion to being passed up by subsequent games to ones I haven’t played to being personal favorites which don’t deserve to be on the list.

I love Romancing SaGa (Final Fantasy Legend I and II) and liked the original Ys but I’m not going to claim they are amongst the best JRPGs ever.

I’ve played every game on your list with the exclusion of phantasy star. It seems you’re skewed Dragon Quest and I am Final Fantasy and that’s okay. I also altered thread title to better accurately express content. You should really find a way to play DQ11 switch version. It has a whole sub quest where you go through each individual game before it playing out 3 scenarios all in gameboy format.

If we are listing PS JRPGs: No Ni Kuni PS3 and Rogue Galaxy PS2 deserve mention.

Both are Level-5 games with excellent stories and gameplay, respectively. The art design in No Ni Kuni and animated scenes were done by Studio Ghibli. Rogue Galaxy came out at the very end of the PS2 life and suffered when compared to the sea of JRPGs on PS2 like FFX, FFXII. The gameplay and graphics were excellent, but storylines could have been better.

That was my second RPG back in the day. Loved the hell out of it and recently found out there was a re-release of it on ps2 with 3 additional characters.

I agree with you on Ni No Kuni

Wrath of the white witch and Revenant Kingdom are both excellent games. Though in the latter case the game was so easy at launch higher difficulty had to be patched in just so players would engage with all the games combat systems

Solid list. Tales of Arise comes out next month and as someone who has never played any Tales games and is going in blind I’m pretty pumped

Tales of Berseria should be the tales game you play. It’s a solid 9:10
