I think the only way you can beat Penance in a no sphere grid run is by Zanmato.

But apparently everything else can be beaten. There is a 1.5 hour long video of someone beating dark anima in a no sphere grid run without using Zanmato. Basically have to use Magus Sisters for damage while having your entire party set to healing & immunity items.

I am not that hardcore. I would like to attempt a limited sphere grid run just through the main story, but screw Penance and dark aeons and most of the monster arena

Self imposed challenges in games has always been a mixed bag with me. You’re undeniably not interacting with and experiencing the game the way the developers intended but FF10 is a really easy game for a lot of us. Probably every person that posts in this thread lol. So players try to find ways to bring that challenge out but it often comes at the exploitation at another one of the games system so is reallysomething special? Idk I rarely do those things unless games specifically purpose something in there for it like FF12 comes to mind where you could wear the firefly brand I think it was called and never go up from lvl 1 but still use the license board. All this is pretty moot anyway because these mega studios like square are trying for the biggest market appeal possible and we are gonna buy it no matter what so it makes sense to make it easier to not alienate new players. Final Fantasy has never been a series known for its difficulty lol

Honestly I think the hardest FF game (and I’ve played them all) is Type-0 remaster on PS4 when you crank the difficulty up. Man that game slaps. It’s also there only M rated title and it’s pretty clear why if you know anything about the game. I love it

I beat 12 just a couple years ago and I think the final boss is one of the more challenging of the FF series. Took me about 5 tries. All the FF final bosses are usually easy so I didn’t worry about grinding before getting to him, for sure underestimated. Made for a fun fight

While we’re on the subject-

This guy keeps a 24/7 FF playthrough going. It’s 6-15 with x-2 and 13-2 and 13-3 included. I watch a few min every now and then when I’m bored and feeling nostalgic. You can tel 10 is his favorite as he has another loop of it in between almost every other FF on there, and it takes fricking forever to finish since he does penance and the dark aeons. I think his ff12 playthrough is even longer though, does all the extras on that one too

The context of 12 being challenging or not completely relies on if you played original or zodiac age. I like the zodiac age much more but it’s far easier and has many more quality of life improvements. Although I will say Zodiark the final aeon (or whatever the ivalice word is) is exceptionally difficult in both

Man no mention of Shining Force 1 or 2 from the genesis in this thread? Those games were freaking amazing.

Loved, loved, loved that game back in the day, as it was the first JRPG I had played in quite a while. Being one of a tiny number of JRPGs early on in the US for the PS1, along with Beyond The Beyond and FF7, helped it stick out.

Unfortunately, I didn't list it because I find that going back and trying to play it again has a lot of issues due to things like a clunky interface and translation issues that make some portions of the game pretty unintuitive. (Mistranslations of what runes do is pretty annoying considering that is a big mechanic in the game, similar to Materia and Summons in FF7)

So I frick with most of your list. Huge FF fan.

I have avoided Persona because even though the gameplay looks dope, the story looks uninteresting to me. I am told by friends it is just very "slice of life" and the story doesn't really amount to much. I definitely don't require a "save the world" story every time but I'd definitely like to be doing something moderately heroic or interesting. Am I wrong about this game?

A major aspect of Persona games is the life simulator part. Going to school, bonding with your companions, and much much more. The social sim aspect of persona 5 is enormous in all ways including number of activities plus there is 18 confidants in the Royal version that if you do everything right you can get all to rank 10 in one play through. Persona 5 takes on a sort of heist theme sort of like oceans 11 in a Robin Hood kind of way. There is a big bad and then there is a big big typical Jrpg end game type bad. Then Royal adds a whole section after the main game I don’t want to say anything about because it’s so awesome you should experience it yourself but it sets up a wonderful antagonist and the Royal addition basically poses the question who is correct our heroes or the antagonist and both views have merit. So yeah you’re off base here and I think a lot of people see the life sim part and assume what you do. It’s an amazing game it truly is. You have to have the right mindset when you go into though. It’s an extremely long game probably the longest I’ve ever seen that wasn’t just stuffed with filler. Everything matters and then there’s even rogue like dungeons to explore outside the main palaces (dungeons in this game) which actually tie into the overall plot. Yes, it takes its sweet long time to get going but it has so many characters and so many game systems it has to. Also there’s like 5 different endings (you could even technically say 6) and relationships with confidants and Actual gameplay (more so in vanilla P5 than Royal where they streamlined things more) have real ramifications based on your actions. It gives more player agency than any AAA title ever has. Last thing I’ll say is persona games are M rated and made for adults really. They tend to be much darker than the rest of the genre especially stuff like DQ and FF

I really wish they would make the final bosses as hard as the optional/bonus bosses so you have to do as much leveling and side stuff as possible to beat the game. Because once I beat the game I have no desire to go back and do more. 13 especially because you can’t even do half the side stuff until you beat the game

1 is a better game, but 2 is still fun.

It adds a city building system to it.

If you enjoyed 1, you will enjoy 2.
