Sons of the American Revolution

Through my genealogical research, I have found that my 5th great grandfather was in the Acadian Coast Militia that was part of Governor Galvez's Expedition that ousted the British from Manchac and Baton Rouge during the revolution, thus qualifying me for membership in the Sons of the American Revolution. Is it worth coming? Anyone else a member?

Only if it ends up being like that Vince Vaughn neighborhood watch movie where they got invaded by Aliens. Not for the Alien stuff, but that damn sure did look like a good way to crush cans and look busy while doing it.

You can get really nerdy with it, but I just pay my dues so I can say I'm a member. More of a status thing than anything else.

My mother, grandmother, and sister are/were DAR. The DAR is a much bigger deal than the SAR and a lot more active , simply because women tend to be more interested in genealogy and are more likely to join organizations like that. It's neat having a connection to your past and if you want to join, go for it . You'll at least get a membership card and a magazine out if it. Just be aware you may have trouble finding ways to be more active if that's what you're interested in. That's why I've never joined.

According to one of my siblings, I qualify from all eight great grandparents.
Ironically, we do not have a stellar Civil War family history as most ancestors were in areas that changed hands repeatedly. The men folk stayed home to try to protect their kin.

I’m not a member but found out a few years ago that I’m eligible. My 5th great grandfather had a last name of Gross but changed it to ‘Groce’ because his brother decided to stay loyal with the Brits (while mine fought with Washington).
I did join the Sons of Texas group recently since this same line included Jared Groce, one of the SFA 300.

The BR meetings are pretty boring, mostly really old guys. I quit paying my dues after a year.
But it’s cool to be to know about your SAR ancestor.
The application forms are a beast to fill out. Dot every “i”.

I was in the Sons on Confederate Veterans for awhile. That makes me a marked man.
Go ahead and join the SAR. It will put you on the racist nationalist list.

My sister's (no pics) research shows we qualify as both Sons/Daughters of the Revolution and Sons/Daughters of the Confederacy.
And here I'd always thought I was just a son of a Bitch.

These days, if you go back far enough you’ll find someone that’ll make you eligible for a bunch of organizations. I could be a member of:
- The Sons of Confederate Veterans
- Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War
- The Sons of the American Revolution
- Society of the War of 1812
- The Mayflower Society
- Swedish Colonial Society
And probably a dozen more organizations I haven’t bothered to research. One of these days they’ll have World War I and II societies I could probably join, too. I’d actually like that a lot.
Hell, I ought to start up the Sons of Second World War Veterans. We can meet at the museum in New Orleans.
You just gotta dig.

Good luck, they are incredibly difficult about the paperwork and proof you have to submit. If your ancestor is not already recognized , they make it extremely difficult. I don’t think they really want new members.

Good on you! I looked through my roots and found that my dads side were crown sympathizers being that they didn’t even come over on the boar until the 1850s
