For years, Bryan McLain would wake up in the middle of the night to check his phone for a missed call from an unknown number. He was certain, each night, the call would come that his son had overdosed.
In recent years, however, the Lafayette developer and restaurateur had fallen into a more comfortable sleep. His oldest child, Matthew McLain, seemed to have overcome addiction and had found new meaning in life through helping others with their recovery.
The dreaded overdose call didn't come while Bryan McLain slept. It didn't come during the darkest of Matthew McLain's days. It came in broad daylight on a Monday afternoon

I was wondering when this thread would hit the OT
Matt started a sober living facility and affected the lives of many. It was pretty incredible reading the amount of posts on his facebook wall the day it happened from individuals and loved ones of individuals whom he helped. I wish this thread was about the good he did and not the deamons that came back to haunt him after being sober for so long.

Matthew McLain's July 19 death was ruled an overdose by heroin potentially mixed with fentanyl, Bryan McLain said, noting the official autopsy report would not be ready for a few weeks more. Matthew McLain, 31, overdosed during a work trip in Florida
That's really sad. Prayers for the family.

Don't be selfish and get mixed up in drugs, people.
He leaves a family in this world without him abd that is sad.
Please don't even start. And if you have started, stop.

We frick with each other so much on here that it’s sometimes hard to imagine the horrors of life hitting one of us.

That was tough to read. Addiction is so destructive.

I’ve known Matt since he was in high school. Terribly sad story. I was pulling for him to be one of the ones who made it out and it looked like he was going to for awhile there.
Has a wife and a small child who is just about old enough to understand when they tell her daddy isn’t coming home.

In spite of the demons that took control of him, he did so much good in the world to help stop others from continuing down the same road."How far that little candle throws his beams! So shines a good deed in a weary world." - William Shakespeare, "The Merchant of Venice"
R.I.P Matt.

That’s very sad. Wherever you are Matt, I hope you get to relive 2019 LSU Football as if it’s the first time for all of eternity.

If you have kids, teach them to stay away from mind altering substances, especially the addictive ones. Addiction and dependence, even on legal things like tobacco and alcohol ruins lives and kills people... Good people.
It's best to never drink or smoke once than take the first of a lifetime of addiction.

So many people die when they relapse because their tolerance is gone and they take way too much. It is sad.
