Why doesn't this apply to the company though? How immoral is it to make some pay while you let others not?

Its great to take a stand for your morals but it means a hell of a lot less when your stand benefits immoral entities.

This $21.57 purchase would likely be $18.73 if not for the loss prevention cost allowance.

Maybe I should have just added a snickers and called it even?

We picked up some cabinet handles for some furniture we were redoing a couple of weeks ago and apparently my wife forgot to scan one. Wanted to go back in and scan it, I told her it wasn't worth the effort to stand in line for another 10 minutes. If Lowes felt that strongly about it, they wouldn't have self checkout.

My self checkout rule.....

If it doesn't scan after I've tried 10 times and no one is around to help, it just goes in the bag. At least for things that are like $5 and under. I'm not going in with the intention to steal, but I'm not waiting around forever after I already have to do this shite myself.

It won't let you continue if you take something off the shelf where you put your stuff to check out and it doesn't scan. So do you just steal everything after that item?

Also, you don't "have to do everything yourself"...you can go to a normal checkout.

In theory this is true, but in reality there is usually only 1 out of 10 registers actually open and manned by a person, so you have to do self checkout

A Home Depot employee will not try to stop you. I was told they let you walk out and may check the video camera and report the theft but, if not a large, costly item, they will do nothing. They write it off and prices for items go up. Either way someone pays for it or we all pay for it.

It appears many have failed to grasp the facetious nature of your question. Regarding California, don’t think the effects of the “$950 rule” will only impact them. Insurance for theft and prices will have to increase nationwide to make up for the losses and potential losses as this nonsense will spread.

I mean, it would cost you a hell of alot more than $21.57 if you got caught and they decided to prosecute.

But they won’t, most stores today have instructed employees to ignore shoplifters up to a certain value. That is probably the OP’s point

Can't wait for my next trip to California. My suitcase will be so much lighter without any toiletries in it. Why bring them when I can just shoplift them all with zero consequences?

If you use self checkout you should get a 10% discount on your entire purchase."

My friend, this is the best post I’ve seen on this site. Honesty and hard work are quickly fading, being the measure of a man.

It’s morally wrong because, “Thou shall not steal”. There are food banks, soup kitchens, if you are hungry.

Morals and laws are the only two things that keep society in check. Sounds like your morals are on the fence and the law is not in favor of making the penalty high enough to be a deterrent. So yeah you prolly missed out on an easy score.
Right now there is probably a guy trying to figure out how he can screw over a contractor who did a electrical job for him today cus after all it’s just a few dollars!!
