Actual students probably don’t hang out around there in the apartments behind the bars unless they’re buying dope. (A dangerous practice)

Blame Katrina.
The area was shite before then but the turnover of tenants from any remaining students to refugees killed the area.
Eeh it's the excessive new construction of apartments.

t actually sadded me a bit, the old University Commons had broken down cars , busted windows, and renters who didn't look like students. No joke , the back part of Tigerland looked worse than 1960/Gulf Bank in Houston. There are people sleeping on mattresses , balconies starting to collapse, and people living out of shopping carts. It was 100% shocking and sad.
I hadn’t been back there in many many years. That’s pretty shocking to hear that it’s ThAT bad. I knew it was ghetto, but I didn’t know it was sleeping on a roadside mattress kinda bad.

Hey, free furniture and a big visible law enforcement presence. Who wouldn’t want to live there?
Posted on 7/23/21 at 12:20 pm to dagrippa
And a huge amount of that new construction was directly tied to the housing shortage of 2005-2006 caused by Katrina.
Every property not occupied for rent or sale got snapped up overnight, meaning a market for lots of new apartments to get built.

While I agree, this is another casualty of Section 8. The landlords are getting free money, not doing any upkeep or vetting of tenants. As long as someone is in there, landlords getting paid. They have absolutely ZERO incentive to give that up.
I know a former marine that is a slumlord in BR. He owns 1000’s of properties that are section 8. He’s told me before that he’s made attempts to renovate and make some properties better, but the tenants run off the contractors every time.
once they go section 8 it matters not how nice they are...

Behind tigerland is a complete ghetto. It's sad that you basically have projects next to the college bar area
Serious question, who's most responsible for this happening?

That’s correct. I was just making the point that more often than not, it’s the tenants themselves that prevent any sort of improvement.

I actually do consider it my responsibility to prevent my neighborhood playground from turning into a place my kids might get shot. Thats basically what tigerland is to LSU.
You probably own some fractional interest in that playground.
Do you think a parent protecting their child is the same as a university protecting an adult student?

I believe it. I wouldn’t want to step foot anywhere close to those shitholes. Imagine how quickly all your tools would get stolen from your truck. They’d rob you blind while you’re inside giving an estimate.
And, people wonder….

What was that about?
he was an LSU fb player, right after the Nebraska game in '76(they were #1 iirc, and we tied them 6-6, he blocked a fg attempt to preserve the tie and give us a chance to win on a Mike Conway fg attempt,) he knifed a guy in the middle of Alvin Dark Dr. in what was apparently a road rage incident, traffic was stopped, horns were honked, words and birds thrown, typical drunk college shite

This is what you can expect all those apartments at Lee/Burbank to look like in the next 10 years. They'll be Section 8 shitholes in no time.

As much as I miss the LSU days and being in Tigerland all the time, even as an adult I would not go to Tigerland now, and I would not send my kids to LSU right now. The entire university is just a mess right now, but Tigerland needs to be torn the frick down and have it start over. That area is a war zone IMO.

LSU doesn’t care if that happens on campus so what makes you think they care if it happens a mile south.

Owners and tenants. The people living there don't care if the area looks like shite and the landlords are getting paid no matter what.
The trash back there use tigerland to sell drugs, rob the kids, and maybe sleep with a white girl.
They shut down mellow mushroom. Tigerland isn't far behind

100% agree with all, it's ironic that as bad as the area outside of the north gate was back in the day, v. Tigerland, there were very few incidents along Highland Rd., and that was the happening strip of bars before the drinking age was upped
