HBO exec “Hey, I know. Let’s make a video game into a tv show and tell the exact same story that players of the game spent between 60-100 hours experiencing, just condensed down to 10 hours. This has never been tried before and nothing can go wrong.”

I wonder how much of that announced budget actually went to the cost of making the show as opposed to Hollywood accounting shenanigans

Works for books, but only if they are completed.

Their biggest series of all time is based on already-established IP. And Last of Us was a phenomenon not because of some breakthrough in gameplay or graphics, but because of the story. It makes sense that it would be a successful transfer to the screen.

a pretty mediocre game is getting a huge budget?

Bruh

If you question whether a game warrants that kind of budget in general, that’s reasonable. But mediocre? It won like 4 game of the year awards and is the 3rd best-selling PS3 game of all time, despite the fact that it was only released 6 months before the PS4, splitting the sales between the PS3 and PS4 versions.

Will be interesting to see if this turns out to be good or not. I kind of think they fricked up not casting Kaitlyn Dever as Ellie, especially considering she publicly stated she would love to do it. We shall see.

not only did the frick up by not casting Dever, but they completely miscast her with the girl they got

Harry Potter will probably exceed it if I had to take a guess. Also Netflix’s (likely to be terrible) Avatar: The Last Airbender live action adaptation is rumored to be like 200 million for the first season, but all the other rumors are terrible, including changing the title to “Trade Winds” which is the dumbest fricking title I could have possibly come up with.

Never played the game. Can someone tell me if it’s another “humans are the real monsters” trope bullshite?

-That's literally every zombie-esque type show/film.

-The guy comparing Marvel movies to Succession is retarded.

-I have no interest in this show. Loved the first game. Had zero interest in the 2nd on account of the politics. Sounds like the show is an extension of the sequel.

So not being a gamer and just reading the plot.

This sounds like it's going to be the Walking dead with titties and lesbians (because HBO).

Probably won't be my thing, but i usually give a new HBO series a chance since they rarely disappoint.

Expect no more than two seasons, then. Carnivale and Rome know what time it is.

Exactly. Pay big money to the writers...story is what drives good shows. Throw some decent budget at the rest and it should fall into place. But just because something is expensive has very little bearing on if it's good.

And HBO has a tendency to throw too much money at even good shows to the point where they have to abandon them despite their quality. You went with Carnivale and Rome as your examples...I was coming to post Carnivale and Deadwood. Great shows that were cut short because of budgets.

yeah, but books are different. When you read a book, most people sort of see a movie in their head, right? If you really loved the property, i.e game of thrones, you then look forward seeing it in movie form and filling in the gaps and really getting that visual. You get my drift here.

But video games are different. You've seen the movie. Not only have you seen the movie, you've controlled the movie. You've been the movie. It's why video game movies don't work. You have to piggy back off the property, not just exchanged the media.

It might work, but I just won't be surprised if it doesn't. It'd have to be good enough to draw in people who've never played the game, and it might be, but if not, you don't just have a built in audience because it was a game. You're built in audience is the most critical.

Imagine thinking game of the year awards and game sales translates to a game being good.

I can tell you're a console peasant, always bringing up their precious plastic box sales numbers.

Carnivale and Rome were 20 years ago, before the golden era of TV and streaming wars we are seeing now.

Totally different world and landscape.

you actually think succession is a good tv show?

How typical. let me guess you're also a marvel fanboy.

Succession is an elite TV Show

Marvel is entertaining enough to follow. I hate their pivot to all things PC which will eventually kill the comic book based movie genre for a few years.

HBO has a very good track record of shows. Entire threads on this board have been dedicated to listing them.
