The velvet ditch = Oxford, Mississippi

It’s a term of endearment used by the locals there. Why is this so funny to me? The velvet ditch. Sounds oddly sexual.

Lived in Oxford for 4 years and never once heard this term

I hadn’t until I read this:
That’s Ole Miss’s starting QB talking about Arch coming to visit. I had to look it up.

I've never heard of this. I Googled it. Well, down the rabbit hole I go....

I heard it used by mostly by the townies (the non-students who work at the restaurants and bars and who tend to be a little rough around the edges) when I was in school there.
I have no idea what it means. It sounds sexual.

In that case, it sounds like the plan by Kiffin is to have Corral take Arch to get some pussy

Explanation of Velvet Ditch, I guess...
I never have a problem leaving!
quote:
Oxford has been a “Velvet Ditch” for quite some time. The “Velvet Ditch” is a name specifically coined for Mississippi and even more specifically to Oxford.
Many locals describe the “Velvet Ditch” as a place that is so comfortable, it makes it hard to leave. Many people even find themselves never leaving, as if you are stuck in a ditch.

Man. I was almost a statistic.

So technically BSL is the velvet ditch as well, not that we’ll fight Oxford for that strangely moist term.

At least their ditch is fancy and made out of velvet where as Baton Rouge is just kind of a regular ol ditch. People have been getting stuck here and wanting to leave since at least the 1960s, “busted flat in Baton Rouge, waiting for a train.”

It’s a nice little small town, and some people say it’s hard to get out of there once you live there for a while. Hence “velvet ditch.”
I lived there for 5 years after graduating from LSU, and I couldn’t wait to gtfo.

I’ll take a Mississippi “silky ditch” any day over the “Vomit Vortex” of Nawlins

Interesting for a place where the bars close at like 11:30.

My parents currently live there, and I haven’t either.

When my maw-maw would babysit my brothers and I and we would invariably act like little shits at bedtime, she would give us each a shot glass filled with Benadryl and Yoo-Hoo. She called them Velvet Hammers. They were.
