People that Smoke at the Gas Pump

Why? Do they not realize that it is really a dangerous act? I see it way too often and they don't seem to care about what they are doing. I seen it this morning, this lady has the pump in one hand and a cigarette in the other.

I think I’ve seen this twice in the last decade.
The first time was a double whammy with the lady also being pregnant, it was in a small southeastern Missouri town that I only stopped at to get gas.

I've seen a car engulfed in flames at a gas station and other people were still pumping gas.
That was over 20 years ago and I can still picture it clear as day. It was a bit surreal.

Not saying it’s the right thing to do/that it isn’t trashy, but didn’t Mythbusters disprove that a single cigarette could ignite puddles of gas?

You can literally put a cigarette out in a can of gasoline. It's a smolder not flame or spark. Now LIGHTING a cigarette in gas fumes is bad news!

Yes, Mythbusters did disprove the cigarette igniting a puddle of gas theory. Still, smoking while pumping gas is stupid.

Smoking anytime vs smoking while pumping gas. They both will kill you one just does it a little faster.

As a 15 year old i was smoking at the pump when some old man went ballistic about it.
I tried explaining that ignition wasn't possible...and he didn't get it and called the the cops.
The cops basically told me, dude don't smoke at the pump.
Told the old man, the kid is right and it isn't illegal.
Small towns.

You can extinguish a cigarette in gasoline, but vapors are easily ignited.

Fancy term for it is risk normalization. Been smoking so face flames are normal. Further, been doing it at gas station forever, nothing ever happened, so it should never happen.

Lol. Except it's not. The only dangerous thing about smoking at the pump is if you're lighting one while you're pumping gas. Throw a cigarette in a puddle of gasoline and lemme know what happens.
