Finally was able to make it down to New Orleans to do my 3-way taste battle between three of the proclaimed “best”: Pizza Delicious vs. Paulie Gee’s vs. NOLA Pizza Co.

First off, I was impressed with the crusts on all three. All three were crisp and nicely foldable.

The first slice I tried was Pizza Delicious. Crust was very good, nice char, but the sauce and cheese were pretty lackluster. I considered it to be pretty mediocre.

Next up was Paulie Gee’s. Once again, crust was nicely-done, and I liked the sauce on this one a little bit more than PD. Pretty solid.

I hadn’t been “wowed” yet, and I was really looking forward to trying the much-ballyhooed Nola Pizza Co. First thing I noticed was that this pie was a little greasier than the other two, but oft times that’s a good thing. When I bit into it, the first thing I noticed was that it was very sour, almost like the essence of sauerkraut. I ate the whole slice, reluctantly, and that same taste lingered throughout. So, I looked on their website, and sure enough, it says they use a sourdough crust. I don’t know if it was overproofed or what, but it didn’t agree with my tastebuds at all. I tried to eat a second slice a little while later, hoping for a different result once it had cooled down a little, but I couldn’t do it. I didn’t like this one at all.

After trying all three, I’d personally rate them like this:

1. Paulie Gee’s
2. Pizza Delicious
3. Nola Pizza Co.

All that said, none of the three had the “taste” I was looking for, and if you’ve had legit NY Pizza before you know what I’m talking about. It’s the flavor of a well-seasoned oven, engrained with the aromas of thousands of pizzas that have baked in it. None of these had that “taste.”

Additionally, I wouldn’t say that Paulie Gee’s is all that much better than my favorites in the BR area (NY Pizza Co., Roma, & Diversion). I also wouldn’t say that any of these are the best in the state… at least I hope they’re not.

The best slice of all was the Sicilian “Freddie Prinze” slice I got from Paulie Gee’s.

Mid City Pizza is better than all three of those. Solid OP though, nice pictures and review.

Nola doesn't even make good food. They just have the world convinced otherwise.

I find Pizza D & Nola to be an appreciable step up from MCP.

It was sarcasm. I find Pizza D & Nola are both good - very good.

Pizza Delicious is good stuff but I find it quite overrated. I'd rather go to Theo's for something similar to that style.

I prefer a good charred crust so #1 looks good to me. #3 looks pathetic crust wise like a frozen pizza

Domenica is still my #1 pizza in the city

I like the sourdough crust at NOLA. It is very pronounced so I can see if it’s not your thing.

Looks greasy & blah!
Just like great Mexican food, NOLA ain’t exactly known for their pizza either.
I’ll put Frank’s Pizza in SHV against any of that crap.

Looks can be deceiving

Here's the description: "Upside down Sicilian with fresh mozzarella, tomato sauce, Pecorino Romano and a sesame seed bottom."

I mean it was nothing to write home about, but it was good.
